The campaign pulls out all the blockbuster registers, but in the end it doesn’t really grow beyond the linear concept of the series as a game.

Hey, the new Call of Duty! What a surprise, there is one again this year. Okay, it’s Infinity Ward’s first since Ghosts, and since its campaign was one of the weakest the series has seen, there was a lot to make up for. This test is about Infinite Warfare. If you make extra money and buy the Legacy Edition, you will also get the amazingly well-done remaster of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. You can find a few lines about this here. If you wanted to be more economical, you not only save money, but also disk space: Since numbers like 130 GB were doing the rounds before: No, Infinite Warfare has “only” about 55 GB, probably a little on the PC more. So it’s a relatively normal sized game of this kind. And as always, one that, like every year, consists of three components.

How was that it? We’ll fly home now, clean up and then we won? Okay, even if there is the obligatory, dramatic hiccup in the smooth implementation of the final plan, it wasn’t that wild now. On Friday afternoon I was still thinking how I should even get through such a space epic on a weekend – pattern again on release day – now that Call of Duty also has a universe, a mission structure, playing around with optional missions and things like that. If Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is even half the game I thought could be, then even Tuesday the universe wasn’t saved.

Well, it turns out it’s maybe half that imaginary game. In a less complicated way: that’s pretty meager, that thing! Started at 4:00 p.m., normal level of difficulty, the solar system was free until midnight. Easy, with all side missions, many collectibles, 80 percent of the weapons unlocked, 100 percent of the spaceship options. I was pretty done, unless I wanted to start again on a higher level right away. Which I didn’t really want. Not equal. In a few days. Because it was short. Or, to put it another way: normal Call of Duty game time. But it was good too. Most of all, though, it was a glimpse of a game that could have been.

Infinite Warfare is basically and for what it can do, a scripted action version of Star Citizen. You have a ship that you equip, with it you fly missions that lead you directly from space into the interior of large ships and back into space, there you have great space battles. You land on planets, shoot around a little and start straight back into space, very relaxed 5G through the atmosphere. All of that really makes the game. It’s the dream we had of a wing commander of the future and it’s all really good. It’s just very little of it.

In a nutshell, the starting position in the solar system in a few centuries: There is the Earth faction, which is nice, colorful and democratic, and the Mars troop, which invades Earth because it is evil and dark and dictatorial. So much hasn’t changed. Evil lands a good hit in the first mission, the fleet of the good is decimated except for two large carriers, which look like a direct hybrid of an earthly aircraft carrier and the Tiger’s Claw. Time for payback and a proper counterattack from the picture book. More or less. It wouldn’t be Call of Duty if it didn’t string together those “last minute” moments. After the mindjacks and moral sermons of recent years, the whole thing is extremely down-to-earth, downright simple and straightforward. And to be honest: I can live with that very well in my high-end Wing Commander fanfiction. It’s space rock and roll from the first to the last minute. Big ships explode, little robots crack jokes, it was a really humorous eight hours that I wouldn’t want to miss. If you think you will find something intellectually profound here, you are welcome to keep it. It can’t have much substance from what I’ve seen.

But as I said, the problem is not what is, but what could be. No, it should be. The game itself takes this direction, it’s not just a wish-something. The structure that is there is as follows: Half of the game are the “real” story missions, in which everything relevant happens. The other half are really optional missions in which you unlock and upgrade weapons. These are divided into ship conquests and pure flight-combat missions.

Join the Marines, see the universe, kill a lot of stuff.

Let’s start with air and space combat. The engine looks fantastic, you can move freely in a very generous area – to be honest, I haven’t even seen an “out of bounds” in the whole game, even if there must be a limit somewhere. The controls are basically a kind of shooter control. Your very agile ship can stand still, slowly “reset” and speed forward with a boost. It doesn’t feel that different from the rest of the game once you look at it from the side, and it plays great. The damage model is very forgiving when it comes to collisions with objects, which encourages cool maneuvers that only take revenge if you’re really nose-ahead with all the boost behind you and rushing into the asteroids. Opposing hits, on the other hand, are extremely painful and the countermeasures that keep charging up are your best friend. Really good space combat action that leaves the simulation to others.

You can also find a little bit of it in some of the captains’ conquests, which usually begin with the fact that you first have to get on board the hostile ship. Some missions rely on stealth, others let it rip right away, most of them end after a very fun and varied 20 minutes in a big explosion and your triumphant return to the Tiger’s Claw – I mean, of course, the … whatever the ship is called here.

The game has a few nice gimmicks on deck as well as on the surfaces of planets that loosen up the fighting: You can hack and take over enemy robots, send out small car-fire drones and homing spider bombs, antigrav bombs take enemies out of cover and leave them helpless drifting around. The weightless fight has just the right mix of momentum and control, and each mission knows exactly how long an element is welcome before something new happens. If you want to complain, then I would generally name the weapons. When the technicians of the infinite warfare world invented hyperspace propulsion, they were so pleased with themselves that they postponed the development of futuristic disintegrators to another century. So you shoot around with the usual CoD arsenal of Assault, SMG, heavy MG and so on. As a twist, one could say that some weapons are energy weapons and others are conventional. Some work well against robots, others against living enemies, a distinction that only comes into play at the upper levels of the game. On the other hand: What am I complaining about? The gun feedback is fantastic, as one is used to from the series, there are many guns and therefore a lot of variety – even if it’s the now well-known one – and everything just works as it should. And by the way, it also looks really good.

All of these missions are optional in that they are left to you to skip half of the game. Because that’s it. Half the game is classified as “optional” and it is in the sense of playing through it, but it is half the game. The good thing is that each of these missions is designed independently, each has its own little idea for this excursion and that you can choose the order in which you work through them. At least that’s the illusion of free will, as opposed to simply packing these missions into a fixed sequence, as Call of Duty usually does.

So that’s it, let’s get to what you expected after seeing all these elements after a quarter of the time: That you can expand your own carrier, that there are some resources, that you put crews together, that there are small ones There are space combat missions that are really optional and maybe just generated. That Infinte Warfare is the better Mass Effect. Not in the story, but in delivering great kick-a*s space action in a solar system occupied by evil space communists. Not much is missing. Everything is actually there. There are plenty of levels in multiplayer. The NPCs are all gathered and sorted according to nationality stereotypes. Your hero even has Captain Kirk moments: “Sir, the captain usually stays on the bridge.” “Not this captain. Not today.” So, give me my red shirts and let me play away missions in 60 frames as many as I want. Infinite Warfare could be all of this with ease, it could also have broken the corset of the series in the best possible way.

Not that we misunderstand each other: it’s not about what is there is bad. It is great. And that’s exactly where the frustration comes from. It settles for being one big, cracking action cracker when it could have been the end of the space action epic everyone else. At least until 2022, then Star Citizen could be ready. But here, now and today, what Infinite Warfare shows is so good that I still can’t quite believe that in the end it looks more like a perfectly successful feasibility study for this other, much larger space adventure.

I’m sure I’m unfair, hundreds of people have worked hard to do something really good, and I’m crying out for more. But that’s the way it is, my little finger is enough and I want all of space.

Let’s get to the things the team wasted their time doing instead of making space action history.

Infinte Warfare: Der Multiplayer

I know Call of Duty has always been multiplayer since number four. It’s the endurance cash cow and the reason Xbox Live has been around for more than three days or so. But after the space ride and the unjust high-end frustration, going into multiplayer and seeing that there isn’t even a dogfight mode with the spaceships … Where are the ambitions? Yes, there are a dozen maps. Each one is well designed, I would bet money that there are no open wounds in their design. Some of them look really good, have nice ideas, an undeniable, simple elegance. And they’re all boring. Not because they’re bad. But I can hardly tell if I’m playing Advanced Warfare or Black Ops 3 or this. There is the Wallrun the double jump – which was implemented much better in the other two – and the return of the killer UAV drone makes just as little real difference as two new killer gadgets – an instant kill laser and a literal hail of bullet cannon. Nice, the mandatory minimum of “innovation” was kept and of course everything runs with perfect netcode and 60fps carved in stone. Pick-10 was taken over by Treyarch and, together with the small cards, the loadouts give a well-balanced mixture that relies on quick confrontation and short distances. No dogfight space combat mode, but locations that make no sense in the setting: How does the black hole get into the solar system …?

The two new modes didn’t convince me, although Defender is the better one and is sure to find its fans. Similar to Uplink, there is a kind of ball, but this time it is not thrown into a goal. Instead, you need to hold onto the ball when you have it. As long as you can. You can’t shoot. Up to a minute or until you are shot. Which happens very quickly if your team is not working exactly on point. The team that has five minutes of possession first wins. Frontline, on the other hand, is a stupid version of Team Deathmatch. Each team has a fixed spawn point. So that it’s not too easy, you have a little more armor when you spawn, but every lap still came down to seeing whether the campers are successful around the point, or you can get away fast enough to be able to play again. Useless. But hey, maybe there are people who like that. It is one of 14 options, they cannot all be winners.

Defender has something, because everyone always has to run to one point and scramble for the ball there. Pure action, team play as essential as it is difficult.

The problem isn’t that something doesn’t work, that would be downright shocking in this case. It’s not the lack of content. As I said, a decent number of maps, 14 game modes, levels, weapon mods, new unlockable classes that wouldn’t invent anything in the shooter world that didn’t exist before. It’s all there. But it was too similar the last two times. It is very noticeable that Call of Duty has made the leap into esports and you can’t turn everything inside out every day. It’s fun for the 08/15 player like me and makes me come back every year to try out the new things and rediscover the game a little. Professionally managed, well-trained teams plunge you into chaos, if you keep turning everything upside down and at least in the USA the Call of Duty esports events are really big. There’s a lot of money in there. This leaves you with only one reason to switch from the at least as good modes in Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 to Infinte Warfare: everyone else does too.

Infinite Warfare: Der Zombie-Modus

Co-op against the horde, it’s now part of it and the DLC has to be able to bring something beyond new maps later. So a Vincent Price cartoon, perfectly voiced by Paul Reubens / Pee Wee Herman – yes, the guy arrested for masturbating in a p***o movie theater – pushes a quartet of stereotypes into an amusement park in the ’80s and leaves the zombies attack them to film the four being eaten. The usual.

Even if I personally couldn’t do much with hordes of zombies, I can’t help but admire the design of the mode. In complete contrast to the aesthetics of the intro and the ugly game world, which is hard to believe is on the same disc as Infinite Warfare. But the slow expansion from the fairly closed and harmless entrance area into other areas of the park offers many opportunities to develop group tactics. Behind everything is a very solid framework of risk and reward, to the extent that you come across huge zombie hordes in the other areas of the park, which can easily overpower a group, but also find new traps – the deadly 80-laser dance floor is sure to lead – who with a little risk taking can keep these hordes in check. If you get it right and by the time you do that, you have a very entertaining series of unsuccessful attempts behind you. It’s fun to die with the right people when the panic in the headset just keeps getting bigger. Experienced in this way, it’s as fun as a well-designed co-op shooter can. Which is a lot of fun. Very very much. For a while. Until the next DLC heralds a new round and it starts all over again.

Neon 80s power makes everything better, even zombies.

Crazy bonus cards, which unlock perks and improve skills, there are killer clowns and David Hasselhoff – as himself. He can be crazy enough if he wants to, you probably didn’t have to turn to ensure the necessary amount of madness next to Pee Wee Herman rotate. A nice idea is the perk of playing old Activision arcade games from the 80s to get a high score when you die. If you succeed, you are back in the game. Of course only if one of the other three survives that long.

You have to look twice, but there is a lot of love and madness in zombie mode and, above all, a lot of good game design. Not the best the series has ever offered in this mode, but certainly not far behind.

Call of Duty: Infinte Warfare

Comparisons with Ghosts, Infinity Ward’s last Call of Duty, are superfluous. Was there an extremely weak campaign and a technology that had not yet arrived on the new hardware will be delivered this time. Really crashing space action, big spaceships, big battles, big everything. But not big enough. The game shrinks from itself, stops a quarter of the way in front of itself when the series linearity breaks up, and as a player you stumble two steps further before turning around confused and wondering why the game doesn’t want to continue. Well, it just doesn’t want to, can’t be changed and in the end there is still enough of what makes a not earth-shattering, but very entertaining CoD campaign. Everything stays a little too much in multiplayer, the small levels keep the action going. Still, too concerned about consistency. There are still the zombies and they deliver with enough humor and playful finesse that the next episodes could be worthwhile.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare could have been a playful change to something bigger for the series. Instead, you get another excellent and extensive shooter winter blockbuster. Is something too, I suppose.
