NFL playoff game weather: Breakdown of what to expect this weekend

AccuWeather's Jessica Pash has a breakdown of what you can expect from Buffalo to Dallas when teams face off this coming weekend.

The previous two meetings between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots were intense and consequential.

This AFC East rubber match Saturday in the AFC Wild Card round will have much higher stake, somehow.

The first matchup, in Buffalo, featured howling winds and pregame snow. Bill Belichick and the Patriots staff decided to take the ball out of rookie quarterback Mac Jones' hands, and New England rushed it 46 times for 222 yards against the Bills for a 14-10 win on Monday Night Football.

Behind quarterback Josh Allen, Buffalo would get its revenge with a Week 16 victory that paved the path for their second consecutive division title.

The weather Saturday is expected to be worse than that first Monday Night matchup. Wind chills will dip the temperature to the minus-10 to minus-15 range.

The final playoff game of the Divisional Round features Sunday’s second regular-season rematch. The Week 5 Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs matchup surprised many NFL fans as the Bills cruised to a 38-20 victory, but both of these franchises are vastly different from early October. Can the Chiefs continue their late-season surge and win 11 of their last 12 games, or will Buffalo get the better of them twice this season? Keep reading below for more information regarding the start time, channel, and live stream options for the Bills vs. Chiefs, as well as a preview and prediction for the game.

What to expect from the Bills vs. Chiefs game?

The Bills vs. Chiefs game today features two of the NFL’s most explosive offenses led by two of the most dynamic QBs in the league. While the start of the season was rough for Kansas City, even having some counting them out of a playoff appearance, they stormed back, fixing defensive issues.

The offense has cleaned things up as well, and don’t expect Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to turn the ball over 3 times again as he did against the Bills in Week 5.

However, while Kansas City’s defense has been rolling, the Bills are one week removed from dominating one of the NFL’s best defenses. Besides the end of each half, the Bills took every drive on offense in for a touchdown. Buffalo QB Josh Allen went 21 of 25 for 308 yards and tossed 5 touchdowns.

Furthermore, while Patriots QB Mac Jones is no Mahomes, the Bills held New England to 17 points, generated 3 sacks, and snatched 2 interceptions. On the ground, Buffalo held the Patriots’ vaunted rushing attack to just 89 yards.

Who comes out on top?

This Divisional Round matchup looks like it could be the NFL game of the year. These two teams have momentum in their pockets and are ready to give their opponent everything they have. History also favors the victor in this AFC matchup. A Bills vs. Chiefs postseason bout has happened four times in NFL history. The franchises have split the series, with the winner representing the AFC in the Super Bowl.

While Buffalo has been a great story this year, Kansas City has unfinished business. Mahomes is ready to erase the memory of last year’s Super Bowl performance with his new-look offensive line. The Chiefs pull it off, but it will be quite the show!

Bills vs. Chiefs Prediction: Chiefs 38, Bills 35

Sunday is looming as a lynchpin moment in the NFC East. Despite a plethora of injuries, various COVID hangups, and the up and down play of players for the Bills, they have a chance to win the AFC East for the second year in a row. All they need is a win or a Patriots loss. In that vein, the Jets are definitely the desirable Week 18 matchup. At 4-12, they’re looking ahead to the offseason, particularly after a loss to the Buccaneers in which they led heading into the final two minutes.

The Bills looked close to a collapse against the Falcons last week, but they didn’t allow a point in the second half and won handily 29-15. Now, the task is simple. Win and get a home game in the playoffs. When hosting at Orchard Park, that’s invaluable, particularly in January when the confines are significantly less than friendly.

The Jets have a lot to be excited about, but it’s simply not their time right now. Zach Wilson is beginning to show some flashes as the No. 1 quarterback, but there’s a lot of work to do this offseason with the BYU product. Michael Carter will be out this week, further hampering an offense that has struggled this year. The Jets are 16.5-point dogs in this game, but they have the potential to keep this game significantly closer.

This one game won’t make or break the future of the Bills, but it is a big game for them nonetheless. Although the Bills boast 5-3 records both on the road and at home, there’s no denying that having to travel to a place like Foxborough would be a brutal Wild Card pull. They want to host. It would mean a lot to the team and the fans, and the Jets are the only thing standing between the Bills and doing so.

Here’s what you need to know to watch Jets vs. Bills this Sunday, including kickoff time, TV channels, and the full Week 18 NFL schedule.
