D.h. der Großteil der Energie wird bei LED-Lampen wirklich in Licht und kaum in Wärme umgewandelt. Auch die Lebensdauer von LEDs ist allein wegen der geringeren thermischen Belastung viel Höher als die einer Glühbirne.

Zwar darf die die Glühbirne nicht mehr verkauft werden, sie darf aber weiterhin genutzt werden, so dass sie noch in vielen Haushalten im Einsatz ist. Dort tritt immer öfter der Fall ein, dass keine Ersatzbirne mehr vorhanden ist, nachdem mal wieder eine Glühbirne "durchgebrannt" ist. Die Lichtausbeute, also die Maßzahl, wieviele Lumen je Watt (lm/W) erzeugt werden, beträgt bei Glühbirnen zwischen 10 und 15 lm/W.
