Who are the patriots playing tonight

The Miami Dolphins were finally brought back to Earth last weekend, suffering a 34-3 thrashing at the hands of the Tennessee Titans. The loss knocked them out of playoff contention at 8-8, as it ended a seven-game winning streak that was turning into a turnaround the likes of which the NFL has never seen. Even with the loss, it was a terrific bounceback for the Dolphins, who were 1-7 earlier this season.

Their opponents on Sunday are the New England Patriots, a familiar face playing for a familiar place: First in the AFC East. The 10-6 Patriots are locked into the playoffs, but they can win the East with a win and a Bills loss to the Jets. However, there’s not much use in postulating Patriots scenarios. They can end up anywhere from first in the AFC to seventh, depending on how things shake out. No playoff team will be scoreboard watching more than New England on Sunday, as they try to play themselves into a better spot.

The Dolphins, of course, have always been an issue for Bill Belichick. They tend to give the Pats issues, and Sunday would be a bad time for that. Losing throws a lot of things up in the air for New England, as they try to exert as much control as possible over their fate. Mac Jones has been exactly what the Patriots have needed him to be for most of the year, and that has to continue against an opportunistic Dolphins team with a surprising secondary.

The Patriots, of course, want to get back to the top of the division after the Bills won the East last year. New England was particularly conservative among its players in terms of sitting out due to COVID-19 in 2020, so a return to the top would be a big confidence booster heading into the playoffs. If the Patriots lose to the Dolphins Sunday, however, they’ll be looking around the league for help to determine their Wild Card matchup.

It’s the conclusion of the trilogy.

The New England Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills for their third matchup in 40 days, this time a primetime wild card showdown with the winner moving on to the AFC divisional round.

Round 1 of the series went to the Pats in blustery Buffalo. Mac Jones famously compiled just three passing attempts as New England held on for a 14-10 win on Monday Night Football. The victory put the Patriots in the driver’s seat in both the AFC East and the conference as a whole as they entered their bye week on a seven-game winning streak.

Since then? It’s been a rocky road for New England.

The team lost three of its last four games of the season following the bye week, including Round 2 of the Pats-Bills saga. Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense came to Gillette Stadium in Week 16 and took command of the game, going the entire 60 minutes without a punt or turnover. On the other side, a strong running game helped the Patriots put points on the board despite a dismal outing from Jones. Buffalo re-took the division lead with a 33-21 win and finished out the season with victories over the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.

If the Patriots had beaten the Miami Dolphins in Week 18, they would be the No. 5 seed and off to Cincinnati for the wild card round. Instead, they now go into enemy territory with hopes of winning the season series against their division rival.

Here’s all the info you need to watch the must-see wild card bout:

Patriots vs. Bills weather forecast: Sub-zero temperatures possible

Weather was a major factor the first time these two teams met in Buffalo, and it could play a role again on Saturday.

The forecast expects the high temperature to stay in single digits while the low can drop into the negatives. On top of that, there is an ever-so-slight chance of snow.

While the temperature is expected to be frigid, the wind will be a bit more mild than it was back in Week 13. Winds are expected to remain below 10 mph.
