Why dont people like anime

Why dont people like anime

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. I can see older adults not liking it because they think its a kids' cartoon, but I know teenagers who understand the subject matter and still don't like anime. Disregarding hentai, what are your reasons for not liking anime?

Why dont people like anime

I like anime......even Lucky Star, but thats me

Why dont people like anime

Cause it's all opinions. If people don't like it off the bat they don't always need a definite reason.

It just doesn't appeal to them.

Why dont people like anime

People are allowed different tastes.

Can I hear a /thread over here?

Why dont people like anime

because its cartoons and some people hate cartoons, I call them terrorists

Why dont people like anime

Spoiler: My reasons for disliking anime are:

Uh... *tumbleweed rolls through*

There aren't any. I love it.

Why dont people like anime

It's subject to sturgeons law like any other medium...<.< That is 90% of everything is crap... and anime is no exception... though I do enjoy quite a few anime shows myself...<.<

look at the avatar...

Why dont people like anime

Because other people do, and sometimes people are desperate to be as different as possible from the frighteningly hardcore otaku crowd.

Well, I dont hate it, but I think anime doesnt take itself seriously half the times, with the traditional japanese pervertedness, over the top scenes, hairstyles and 12 year old kids voicing characters that are clearly adults.
But I like a good story, and I dont care if its with real actors or animated ones.

Why dont people like anime

I don't like anime, and it's mainly because I don't watch it. I don't go out of my way to find the mature complex stuff, my only experience with it comes from occasionally stumbling on episodes of Naruto aired on Cartoon Network, I usually watched a minute of it before changing the channel in disgust.

Probably not the best representation for decent anime, believe it.

Why dont people like anime

Well, I actually do love anime, but there are certainly some trends in it that I find aggravating. Particularly, the way that anime often treats women (there are exceptions, but I'm talking about the medium as a whole) is often immature. The whole fan service thing, the fact that anime women regularly have breasts so large that any real person would have broken their back carrying them around, the various stereotypical roles that anime women so regularly play. Don't get me wrong, these things don't absolutely ruin anime, but they do make me ashamed to admit that I'm a fan to people whose opinions I don't know on the matter. I can defend anime, intellectually speaking, from a lot of the criticisms that are raised at it, but with that one the only defense that can be raised is "well, there are some exceptions!"

Why dont people like anime

Anime is actually quite popular on this forum. Not my thing but each to their own.

Why dont people like anime

I Guess to some people anime has this weird geeky vibe around it, which is why they don't want to be ascociated with it, which is why they don´t watch, i do watch it though, and read manga, which is even worse (to some people) then anime.

Why dont people like anime

Why do (a lot of) people not like buttsex? just because it's not their thing.

to each their own.

Why dont people like anime

i like it, looking for a new one to watch actually but don't want to do yet another recommendation thread. got one in mind anyway, Kuroshitsuji (AKA Black Butler). anyone seen it? someone mentiioned it a while ago and said they really liked it.

I personally have never gotten into anime but I blame the public perception of cartoons. The common anime on tv isn't exactly good anime (at least sofar as I have hear people talking about good good anime). If I were exposed to different kinds of anime I probably could change my opinion.

Other than that, the art style bugs me at times.

Why dont people like anime

I don't hate it at all, but it has been awhile since I watched one. They need to air more on TV. And not the crappy ones.

As for why others don't like it? I'm guessing its because they just don't prefer it.

Why dont people like anime

I guess it's because people see it as just a stupid and childish cartoons. Those people who disregard anime as being immature cartoons are just idiots themselves.

It's like saying all comics are immature because they're books with pictures.

Page 2

Why dont people like anime

I'm not trying to troll people who don't like it. I'm not complaining that they don't like it. I just want to know if there are any trends that might limit its audience size.

Ah, the main reason is not so much the anime, but what it does to people; aka the problem with anime are the obsessed ones. I understand that there are those obsessed with all sorts of things, but in the end that will be the one standard thing that can be attributed to the downfall of a media or medium: it's audience.

...and I guess because they don't really like to change the formula up. When they do though they usually get good ones.

Why dont people like anime

With an avatar like this what do you think? Yeah I like it but I can see where others come from. Something my mate once told me: "Where the men look like women and the women look like whores." I lol'd.

That said though some Japanese cartoons are great, having more to them than just an excuse for lady flesh. Naruto's expansion on its concepts of 'Chakra' lifeblood are pretty cool I think.

Why dont people like anime

Because we are allowed to have different opinions? Because the few I like such as Cowboy Bebop and Gurren are in a minority? Because most anime are more interested in creating a show about young girls, who are Goddesses, and are in love with awkward young men, who are not having any sex for some brooding reason, while they casually doodle all day long without paying rent or any taxes to the Government? Because most of them don't make sense, even when giant robots are included?

Honestly, if you don't see the sorry state the current trend MANY shows are following in the Japanese animation area, then I don't know what to say...

Why dont people like anime

because people are allowed to like whatever they want and maybe its just not their cup of tea. Like I know smart people that dont like video games but I dont go try to convince them that video games are an artistic medium and a lot of really insightful.

But of course theres also people that dont even want to try it because its not the "norm" so they really cant say if they hate it or like it because theyve never tried it

Why dont people like anime

because its cartoons and some people hate cartoons, I call them terrorists

And we don't negotiate with terrorists... OT: Anyway, I don't like anime(LOVE CARTOONS). I'm perfectly ok with others liking it, but I just don't. Maybe its just the stereoypical anime stuff that turns me away.

Then again, maybe because its always on when I'm asleep.

Why dont people like anime

Why is it so hard to understand why people don't like anime? Anime is a thing. It exists in reality and thus it's bound by law to split opinions to a lesser or greater extent. Some people like liquorice, some don't Some people like The Escapist, some don't Some people like harmonicas, some don't Some people like porn, some won't admit that they do Some people like anime and some don't.

If you are looking for actual reasons, there are as many as there are people involved in the discussion.

Why dont people like anime

"Scrawny 90 pound anorexic 12 year-olds out-muscling trained 300 pound muscle-bound wrestlers," to name one reason I dislike anime...out of, like, seven million. But I'm cooking right now and don't have time to list the other six million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand, nine-hundred ninety-nine reasons. Maybe later.

Why dont people like anime

Because I've always preferred Western animation. Called me prejudiced, generalising, whatever you want, the style of anime just annoys me.

Plus, I've never gotten away from old Western cartoons. Whenever I consider watching one, I usually just decide to go and watch Animaniacs or Darkwing Duck instead.

Why dont people like anime

I like anime, but to interrest me that's gotta be something that sound really good, because I not gonna waste my time watching every piece of shit that comes out.
And I don't like the ones who are too damn long or that sound that never end just like Naruto or One Piece. I am too selective about it but fuck that i have shit to do...

A vast majority of the ones I saw were awful. The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya ranks at number 1 of the worst animes I've seen.

Why dont people like anime

I don't hate anime. I just like the smell of Manga paper more.

Amen to that sister. /thread.

OT: Different people have different taste/opinion/preference. Deal with it.

Why dont people like anime

Most people don't get to know really good uncut, nicely subbed or dubbed animes and aren't interested to involve themself into the subject. Thats understandable and absolutly ok of course. I'm just sad that animes have a bad stigma around them and you will be poorly rated by other people if you say you watch them.

Why dont people like anime

People have different tastes.

Crazy huh?

Why dont people like anime

I'm just not into it. It's not my thing, y'know? The overall style kind of turns me off...

EDIT: I like Pokemon and Digimon, but that's because I grew up watching them.

Give me a Region 1 DVD player and I happily would. Stupid UK having to be all different...
All we get is Ducktales and Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers. They're good, but nothin' on ol' DW.

Why dont people like anime

Most people out side of anime think all of it is like the main ones everybody knows like: Naruto, Bleach, Pokemon, FMA, etc. They fail to see the variety and intrest.

I also think most anime fan are also at fault from alienating it from other people. Some are very closed minded and hail anime as the best thing ever and if somebody doesn't like it they're stupid. Of corse many people might not like because of the style and cultural differences, but I've gotten a few people to at least watch some anime movies and series to people who were supposedly uninterested in it; just by casually mentioning the story and hopefully if they're interested they'll watch it.

I think this is the general idea. People already have perception of it (see that god awful anime parody on GTA IV). They usually only see it as that way with no variation: big-titted girls in skimpy outfits fighting in giant robots with seizure inducing (and cheap) backgrounds or something. Since people usually view it as that they think that only mouth-breathing basement dwellers can enjoy that sort of thing. Since they don't want to be viewed as a basement dwelling mouth breather, they avoid it like the ebola virus. No one wants to be an alpha-nerd. Same thing with D&D (not that I play it, just an example). I watch like, but lately I've been dling more than watching. Of course there are things I dislike about it: 20 girls wet for some random guy with no personality, shit that's all ecchi and no substance, sometimes serieses go on for way too long, and other reasons probably (sometimes serieses are just stupid or repulsive).
and this Edit:

It reminds me of Final fucking Fantasy *rage building*

And that. I can totally understand this one.

No one can not like Code Geass if they give it a shot.

How many episodes does it take before I can say gave it a shot?

Most are stupid. Where a kid can beat well trained adults Usually unfunny and annoying chirpy characters that cause violent outbursts Half the time I find it kinda creepy and it's always so predictable

Obviously there will be exceptions to the rules but I haven't found one and I don't want to spend time looking for the exception

Why dont people like anime

Because of the different tastes and opinions of the world.

NAAAH. It's all a global conspiracy to destroy Japanese cartoons with nagging and they do it because they got molested by Sephiroth!!!

Why dont people like anime

People only know what they see on TV. They may assume that anime (or anything from Japan) is a bunch of weird, random nonsense, and are very closed minded about it and don't want to get involved (This is how I used to be a few years back), or they hate the fanbase for being annoying weeaboos and are afraid of becoming one of them. Or maybe it's just not their thing, which is fine by me.

I love anime, but I also love western animation as well. I spent my whole childhood watching western cartoons more than Pokemon or DBZ. It's just that I'm older and most western shows now suck, so I watch more anime now.

Why dont people like anime

No one can not like Code Geass if they give it a shot. Other anime on the other hand is probably more open to opinion. But Code Geass is in my opinion, the greatest anime ever made.

I despise Anime with a burning passion Maybe it has something to do with the creepy fans who post topics about "which anime character would you sleep with?" and other topics of that ilk. Maybe its the androgonous(sp?) teens that can out-muscle people 50times their own build Maybe its the fact that every bloody one of them looks the same Maybe its because women are treated like weak pieces of meat with chests that resemble something out of a vat from ICI Actually, I know what it is that makes me despise it..... It reminds me of Final fucking Fantasy *rage building*

Decent art style (kinda) but ultimately a waste of time

Look at any other media and make the points in criticism at them. You have now realized you are an idiot.

Seriously. Just go try it. Then come back, say it wasn't your thing and we will listen.

I just did, and I found that only 2 out of the 5 stuck. So, congrats, your point is moot, lol.

I don't like anime because, after years of watching and enjoying it, I realized that it's all the fucking same. I'm so god damned bored of the same 5 genres being played out again and again and again in exactly the same way. There are some gems, like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, but other than those it is all really awful and boring. I can't stand the passive-aggressive way 90% of the characters do things, and I realize that that's how the Japanese culture operates so it's technically not the writer's fault, but oh my god, it just infuriates me so much that they can never fucking spit out what they want to say. It's so god damned stupid. Ugh.

Why dont people like anime

The reason some people don't like anime is the same reason some people don't like Lil Wayne, documentaries, Hello Kitty, broccoli, or the color pink. It's just not their thing.

Why dont people like anime

I love it for the most part

as for the rest, the dubbing, oh god the dubbing

Why dont people like anime

Why dont people like anime

The same reason people don't like vegetables, alcohol, dogs, swimming in the ocean, sex, or eating in public: everyone is different.

Why dont people like anime

Depends by what you mean.

If you mean in general, some people aren't too fond of common tropes like giant robots and the like (know the series my avatar's from? Not exactly a gateway series), and even I'll admit to being disinterested in most works per season. If you mean the entire medium, on the other hand, I'd just recommend Kino's Journey and get on with things.

Most of the fans are well (im speaking generally for the country im in).... i dont really have a word to describe it which wont cause a flame war, but lets just say you'd want to avoid them at all cost's. predictable half the time (but then again whats not) Japanese references, A LOT of Japanese references in most ive seen, tell me do you understand kanji puns? That puts a lot of people off. laughable duds half the time. Fan Service. Thats all i have to say for that one. Fillers excessive use of fillers. most loose any sence of direction in the middle (at least the ones ive seen) Well you can argue some are manly and all that, but really... no one will believe you, and they in my view are somewhat right in most cases.) because alot of people prefer a different entertainment medium. people don't age half the time, (mabie shes born with it.... mabie its anime.) (ok this point was a nit pick here, but come on look at the moms, and then look at the other characters. they almost always look the same age, regardless of being in the 30's-40's.) ill probably think of some more later.

still somehow i still keep coming back for more.

Its probably because people change and their tastes shift from one thing to another, or that they preferred other stuff from the start. I used to be an obsessive anime fan when I was younger, but I grew out of it when I got seriously into into video games in high school. The only two anime series I still watch are Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop.

closed mindedness. Most of the people who "hate anime" end up diehard fans if you can get them to watch it. At least the ones i know.

I thoroughly enjoy anime, the genre facinates me! I really like Samurai Champloo, DBZ, full metal alchemist, maybe some others that aren't coming to mind.

Why dont people like anime

Aside from the fact that people have different tastes from one another? Well, maybe they've been introduced to anime the wrong way. People often confuse bad anime with all anime. For example; miscellaneous individual see's commercials for (or watches a bit of) something like Naruto or Bleach or DBZ, then they decide that animes such as FLCL or Bokurano are just as silly. I'm sure people who see and hate certain cartoon-network-approved animes have a tendency to use them as an example or excuse to hate on all other anime. A bad first impression can ruin just about anythings reputation with anyone. Plus, from what I hear, the eyes and hair styles are just too absurd and ridiculous for anyone to even want to try and take them seriously, which I can partly understand. And then, since most anime is sci-fi or fantasy based, there will be criticism coming from people are against that as well.

In the end I guess it all is just opinions and tastes, not everyone shares them and plenty of people like to bash the things they don't like. Really, there's no way to change it and no reason to either, we anime geeks are far from alone out here so why fuss over people that prefer other forms of media?

Why dont people like anime

There's a certain flavor that the vast majority of anime has, that a few series like Cowboy Bebop managed to avoid, that just doesn't appeal to very large demographics in the Western world. They're awfully dramatic, even when they're supposed to be comedies, they run like soap operas, often with magic teenagers, and honestly there are people that just like live action better just because they appreciate acting. Many people love it, some people can't even see it on the screen without getting nauseous.

Why dont people like anime

Some people have tastes different than yours. I for one just cannot stand the art style, story-telling, or characters. Get over it.

EDIT- Okay...I liked Cowboy Bebop, but that was because it has as few anime tropes as possible, a very western style, and just good story-telling. The actual characters still kinda annoyed me, though. If only Ed wasn't in it....goddammit.

Because we're in a society thats unknowingly conditioned to consider cartoons childish? Whilst also bieng in a society, there those who don't "connosoir" animation consider anime just to be cartoons from japan. Dispite the differences in writing style, content and subject. When you break down why cartoons are made for kids much more than live-action, its plain to see from what childish live-action there is: MI High bieng a perfect example; child actors hardly ever equal good actors - and to make adults act in a kids thing implys they do the MI High acting - over-the-top, with pauses to scream for 3 whole seconds with a close-up, with adults acting like children (or rather, dumbasses) so no self-respecting actor will dare go near it. With a cartoon you can have older people who can act do the voices of children - which is what they want because kids assosiate with kids (and anthropamorphic animal-people, again a similarity) There is just so much more in kids cartoons than kids get in live action - for good reason, that it is just assumed in the west that if a cartoon is on TV, its probably for children - as Live Action usually isn't.

At least, this is in England anyway.

Why dont people like anime

I don't like it because of it's art style, but obviously I'm pretty alone on that one.

Why dont people like anime

I don't like anime because I haven't found one that had a story that I liked, with good voice actors and good animation. I don't want to watch subs, if I wanted to read, I'd read a book.

But I like the idea of anime because it seems to me that it is entwined with geek culture, that is why I've attended anime conventions.

Why dont people like anime

Two reasons. 1. Japanese culture is extremely strange and the stories rarely make sense. (This is MY opinion. if you like the stories and the culture, be my guest)

2. The biggest reason for me is that I just don't like the art of anime. That drawing style just makes it impossible for me to really enjoy it.

Why dont people like anime

I enjoyed a couple in my life, but in general, I can't get into them. I won't say why, there's a huge variety of them. Too many. I just don't take well to the art style, the stories, and the foreign-ness of it all.

One that I can say I enjoyed, off the top of my head, Nerima Daikon Brothers, but mostly because it didn't take itself too seriously. When it did though, I was rolling my eyes.

Why dont people like anime

I've given up with anime lately, mostly for these reasons. 1: The manga is often better. I've heard that this is due to the fact that since manga is more accepted than anime in Japan (as anime is seen as the equivalent of cartoons over here, something that you might watch a more mature version of sometimes or see a bit of, but following them after a certain age seems immature) so the animated adaption is aimed towards a younger audience. They also like to cut unnecessary sections as well and if the series isn't a sure fire hit, it will be aimed towards a shorter run. You also then have the problem of adapting anything to another medium as well, with a lot of little things being lost including the stuff you filled in yourself (such as the voices). 2. A lot of it is indeed crap. Popular stuff is popular because it's either safe or it just happens to appeal to a large audience. More niche focused material is almost always going to be better, if only due to the fact that it can focus on it's task rather than pleasing a larger base. However, this runs the risk of not hitting the proper niche during it's run (becoming a cult classic), underperforming (niche being too small), being stuck in a certain rut or risk dying (if you try to expand outwards after you've reached your limits with a certain area, you risk upsetting the original fans, and the original stuff might not appeal to the new fans), etc. 3. It requires a lot of time/money/effort to watch. This is true of any show, but anime in particular. If you decide to watch a single episode, you have to commit half an hour to that, maybe more if you're watching online. Speaking of watching online, assuming you're not watching via hulu or something (where you get the ads as well), you've got to learn to properly read subtitles for a lot of series, wait on loading screens, and find a proper site once you've committed (often you'll hit a lot of ad heavy sites or worse). If you decide to support the official release, well, since you're part of a niche it's gonna cost you a lot more than normal. And then you have to deal with whatever the localization changed as well, in addition to the original changes in the paper to animation transition. 4. I get bored with it. This is mostly the summed up version of all the other points. Often I'll read the manga, and not even really want to buy it to reread, so I don't feel the need to watch either the animated version of it, or the bastardized original story featuring a lot of the elements from there. When I do, it's often one of the much smaller series, which means it's gonna be a lot shorter than the safe shounen series that's running into its triple digits. And then I've got to dedicate half an hour per episode, which I could be using to replay some of my games (several of which are waiting right next to me, stacked in order of want to replay), or do work in the form of studying or writing stories, or starting to watch a movie I like. My days already seem short enough, even with a mild case of insomnia, so I doubt fitting in a series would be an easy task.

Come summer though, I sometimes have the time, so I'll watch a series or two, but that's about it.

Why dont people like anime

I just don't particularly like the art style

Why dont people like anime

I think it has something to do with it not being 'cool' to like. There's probably some anime watchers that won't admit to liking it.

Me personally, most anime is just bad. There's a few that I used to like but it went downhill. I just don't care for it.

Why dont people like anime

Because they have different tastes than you. I know it's way out there but think about it for a while and it might make sense.

I can't complain about anime, seeing as it's not my genre of choice. But I would like to invoke sturgeon's law. I have to find the right shit. I may get into some more complacated manga (I really liked Akira, pages and pages of scenery porn), but not anime -- it's just not my style.

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. I can see older adults not liking it because they think its a kids' cartoon, but I know teenagers who understand the subject matter and still don't like anime. Disregarding hentai, what are your reasons for not liking anime?

I used to watch a lot of anime. It was so bad that all of my friends were some form of anime NERD (that included my first ex-girlfriend... a whackjob for anything made by Rumiko Takahashi, especially Inu Yasha) A lot of anime are repetitive... same old situation with a slightly different twist somewhere somehow... Usually involving space aliens that look exactly like humans. A typical good anime series are short, start out funny, and then tries to pass itself off as something to be taken seriously as if ther was a moral to the story form the beginning and then it ends up being a turd *COUGHTRIGUNCOUGH*. Decent anime series are usually dragged out and typically have a shit load of fillers(the Dragonball series, Sailor moon, Evangelion, Gundam, etc.) and just get boring for me. Pokemon was the worst at the beginning.... %90 of the battles were "use (special attck of verious pokemon)!" as Ash would retort with "PIKACHU, DODGE AND THUNDER(BOLT)/QUICK ATTACK!" "CHHUUUUUUU!" *enemy pokemon deadified from the neck up*

It's not that I don't like any of these series anymore, but a lot of them had lost its appeal to me. i still have some fondness for Yu Yu Hakusho, Dective Conan, and a few select others, but I am no longer one of those weaboo.

Why dont people like anime

I'm going to simplify my answer. It was going to be I don't like the animation styles (plural because I realize they don't all have the same styles, but I don't like the ones I have seen), dialogue, characters, stories, etc... But I guess I should just be honest: I just don't get Japanese entertainment. Something just gets lost in it all. I guess I can't really say that as a true blanket statement because I enjoy most of the big Nintendo franchises (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong), but those have clear western influence). I use to watch Digimon when I was a kid and it seemed good to me for a while until I got older, but then a friend of mine a few years who was heavy into anime tried to get me into some things (Dragonball Z, Naruto, others whose names I can't remember). My reaction was largely staring at the screen confused. It could have a lot to do with my nearly complete lack of knowledge of Asian cultures in general.

So, maybe I don't like anime because I'm ignorant? I'm trying to be honest without pissing the fans off because we all have things we love that others just don't get. I think The Wire was an intense and engaging show, but many of my friends got bored halfway through the first episode.

Why dont people like anime

I love how the anime fans are saying that the reasons for those who don't like anime is cuz haters find cartoons childish. I'm calling shenanigans. I love cartoons. Anime just takes itself too seriously even when the plot is on flippin' crack. Durarara, I'm looking at you.

Of course, there are a few good anime. It's just that most of them are terrible.

Why dont people like anime

Why dont people like anime

Anime is not a genre, its a medium. It really baffles me when people say they "like" or "hate" anime. Every single person in the world could probably find an anime they really like and one they really hate. I put "Gantz" as one of my favourite TV shows period and I cannot stand a single episode of Pokemon. Anyone who says they hate anime probably just hasn't found the right series yet.

Why dont people like anime

I personally hate anime because I hate the art style. It freaks me the hell out. I just find the huge eyes, small mouths, and crazy hairstyles both annoying and disturbing, and the emotive expressions are just plain horrible (huge angry head with throbbing pulse-point, tears streaming down face, etc.). I'm not even including the irritating, stereotype-clone characters or silly plots. The only one I could ever stomach was Pokemon when I was a little kid, but that's because I grew up with it. Other than that, I find it insufferable.

Don't even get me started on bishonen.

Page 5

Why dont people like anime

I like anime because it is like cartoons but more violent, funny, and perverted. It's cartoons for adults.

Why dont people like anime

Most anime tropes. And Sturgeon's Law.

And most of the anime that gets translated is shonen, so...

Why dont people like anime

A simple answer would be that too much shit happends at the same time, way too rapidly. Every fightscene is a mishmash of colours and gargantuan swords.

Oh, and they're weird.

Why dont people like anime

The only explanations I have ever heard are: 1)They are all stupid(wait...what?) 2)They are cartoons so they must be childish(no, no they're not)

I myself love anime, as my avatar may hint.

Why dont people like anime

A vast majority of the ones I saw were awful. The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya ranks at number 1 of the worst animes I've seen.

LOL thats like the number 1 best anime for most people XD

As with any medium you gotta separate the crap from the gems

Why dont people like anime

It can be hard to keep someone's interest if they don't care about the characters or don't read quickly enought to follow subtitles, but it's just oppinion really, doesn't matter how big a robot you pull out

Why dont people like anime

Not sure why I've turned off it, I did watch quite a bit when I was in my late teens.

I guess I've given up on a lot of TV shows really, so Anime in all it's forms isn't really an exception. A lot of the content matter these days doesn't appeal to me anymore either, so for me it's just a change of taste.

Why dont people like anime

Well I like anime, well certain varieties of anime anyway. However for those that don't I imagine it's either that old and very very very incorrect perception that animation is just for kids, and personal preference. Although really I don't really understand how someone can dislike all anime because there's such a wide variety of styles and genres. It's pretty much like saying you don't like movies. Anyone who says they don't like anime obviously hasn't sampled enough of it to find something they like and is too close-minded to give it a chance.

Why dont people like anime

Personal preference. Who would have guessed?

Why don't people like pepper on their dinner? Or, hell, why do they like pepper on their dinner?

Reasons I don't like Anime: 1. Large number of androgynous characters. 2. Large number of anime feature poor production values, which is marketed as "trademark anime". i.e. same backdrop in mutiple scenes, same corny strobe effect in preparation for action. 3. Same characters making constant appearances. i.e. Pedo-schoolgirl/innocent, long-haired villian, spike haired hero, all three characters are in a large amount of anime, and all three characters are always identical with exception of costume. 4. The "good" anime series almost always have the same storylines. "magic demon/vampire/monster" or "robots". 5. Fans of anime. 6. Alternatives to anime are always better. American cartoons- personally, Venture Bros. and Harvey Birdman. Other foreign animations are better too, i.e. Triplets of Bellville. Virtually everything about anime is shoddy and similar. Claims of it being its own "style" are faulty. If a restuarant had a menu with only three or four items, and the food was always half-rotten, nobody would say it was a "style" of restuarant, with a "unique" selection. It would be considered a shithole. Anime isn't considered a shithole, and it has a fan base, largely because of two primary reasons. 1. People who love Japanese cultural items, regardless of how stupid it may be. 2. People who love "magic demon/vampire/monster" and "robot" stories, regardless of characters, style or lack thereof, and quality. As long as the storyline is in those two catagories, they are almost guaranteed to love it.

I am open to the possibility that a good anime does exist. But as it stands, I have yet to hear about it, or see it.

Why dont people like anime

Similarity in art styles can make it dificult for outsiders to differentiate between animes and they end up blending together, and make stereotypes easier as one bad anime becomes easier associated with better ones simple by their being an anime.

Perhaps it's also the stigmatism attached to it due to its percieved nerdy fan base, in the west I mean.

Why dont people like anime

I like anime......even Lucky Star, but thats me

virtual high five for you sir...wait...if you say you like elfen lied to i think i will have a nerdgasm.

Why dont people like anime

I always found the art styles to be too detailed or angular for my personal tastes.

Also, I prefer smoother animations and more frames than the typical anime seems to use.

Why dont people like anime

I didn't like anime but then I tried it and now I'm addicted...so I guess some of them just don't watch it but still bash it.

Page 6

Why dont people like anime

The hardcore fanbase can be annoying as fuck and when you are standing next to them at the mall you cant just mute them like a 12 year old on live.

Why dont people like anime

You might as well ask me the question: why don't I like techno? I'll still give you the same answer as pretty much every other question. 'Because I just don't get it.'

Why dont people like anime

My main issue is repetition. Western animation is diverse whereas anime, regardless of tone is very similar if not outright the same in drawing style.

Why dont people like anime

The voices, art style, tone of story (in general), music, and the fact it is animated.
I may be able to get over a few of those for a great story, but the voices are deadly. The high-pitched Japanese voice actors kill my ears, and the English ones either suck or try to imitate the Japanese ones.

Why dont people like anime

To start off, I love it... But some people don't like it probably because its too different from western animation... The art style can throw off people... like the hair colors, which ties into the whole manga being in black and white deal... or the exaggerated expressions, fully forgetting that western animation has been using exaggerated expressions since the beginning of animation...

Also, all those stereotypes that exist... people think its all porn... or everything involves collecting... or all the females having such large breasts that they have their own orbit, (which theres just as much or more anime featuring females with normal to flat breast sizes)... Plus theres the whole teen angst thing that alot of people hate...

Why dont people like anime

People are allowed different tastes.

Can I hear a /thread over here?

/Thread

also I just don't enjoy watching tv/shows I Prefer Comics

Why dont people like anime

Probably been done, but...

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. I can see older adults not liking it because they think its a kids' cartoon, but I know teenagers who understand the subject matter and still don't like anime. Disregarding hentai, what are your reasons for not liking anime?

Why don't people like science fiction? Why don't people like drama? Why don't people like opera? Why don't people like onions? Anyway, I can see the artistic styles turning people off. I love it. I love the art more than I love the actual genre, myself. There's a lot of anime where I don't like the story, but love the style. I can see that. I mean, I tend not to hate any medium carte blanche. Anime's just a container. I have trouble hating the overarching packaging. I'm watching Bleach right now through Netflix, just finished Fullmetal Alchemist, love Tekkaman Blade, enjoyed Claymore, and have a few more udner my belt, but I'm hardly a anime fan per se.

Or they're just responding to stereotypes about spky haired kids and underaged girls.

Why dont people like anime

Anime is rather simplistic and does usally follow the steryotypes. Even if they're Asian they look Caucasian. EVERY Anime will have porn in it eventually. Usually anyone who deems themselves a Weaboo is into the really creepy stuff such as Loli(in fact, every Weaboo I know is.), and as my final statement, Anime fans are usually like you, OP, because they think it is wonderful and perfect and should be "enjoyed" by everyone.

Why dont people like anime

i like anime ? its alot different from the censored boring stuff from the west.. cmon Highschool of the Dead = awesome ^^

Why dont people like anime

Well, sometimes it's just not some people's thing.

It's not really for everyone, you know?

Why dont people like anime

Because I'm not familiar enough with the various genres and the culture from which it emerges, so I cannot appreciate it as much as I should? What other reason is there?

I imagine it is the same for why Japanese people don't watch Family Guy or whatever. Unless they do. Which would be strange.

Why dont people like anime

I just don't like the medium, with the exception being Cowboy Bebop, and perhaps other animes that are like Cowboy Bebop (which I haven't seen.)

As I've said before Cowboy Bebop is probably as far from "typical" anime you can get without calling it western animation.

Why dont people like anime

I personally like anime, but I can easily understand why others don't. Frankly, it's weird and there's always the stigma that all animation has of just being kid's stuff. We've grown used to the absurdities of the Japanese, but it's confusing to newcomers.

ill watch or read anything by shirow and i love the cowboy bebop series and movies as well as akira.

but i dont like anime. it dull, repetitive and just generally really badly written.

Why dont people like anime

love it and would recommend death note to anyone who hasnt watched it

Why dont people like anime

I find anime riddle with cliches. Maybe I've just watched too much of it and out grown it. I need a really compelling story with great characters. Most of the recommend anime I hear are from 5 or 10 years ago.

If any body knows of anything recent that's really good or original. I'd appreciate the recommendation. Preferably without high school kids as main characters.

Why dont people like anime

I love animation hence I love Japanese animation (Unless it's Haruhi Suzumiya, I hate that *****). Honestly, some of my favourite anime shows are the ones I grew up with, when I was too young to realize they where from Japan in the first place.

I'm currently watching old Wizard of Oz episodes.

Why dont people like anime

Honestly, what's not to like about this picture!?

Why dont people like anime

I just dont like new anime. The rise of the whiney hero archetype drove me away and there's too much focus on younger characters. Give me characters like Ken, Fist of the North Star or Golgo 13.

Why dont people like anime

People also tend to generalize all anime as being the same. So they see something like DragonBall or Sailor Moon and think that they can apply their opinion to all anime. Then take the fact that most anime dubs are pretty terrible and that most people who don't watch anime (or foreign films) habitually are not very likely to seek out a sub instead. This is sort of a problem when the genre "anime" really refers to the fact that is Animated and from Japan (or at least done in a Japanese animation/art style).

Take, say, Gurren Lagann and Grave of the Fireflies. Both fall under the category: anime.

... The only thing binding these works together in a genre is their place of origin and the fact that they are animated.

Both are really good, don't get me wrong. But they heartily disprove the conception that all anime is pretty much the same (without going into opinions of lack of quality is certain works).

Why dont people like anime

People tend not to like anime because they either haven't seen a good dub (which is hard since you have to look for those outside of the TV scheduale (usually)) or they see the hardcore otaku crowd and want nothing to do with it or think we're all devil worshiping sadists.

For the record i love it <3

Page 7

Why dont people like anime

It's such a broad term that saying that you 'dislike' anime would be a gross generalization. Like saying you hate games because you played one that sucked once. Most people who do say that they don't like anime don't even have any idea what it is in the first place. Like so:

"Scrawny 90 pound anorexic 12 year-olds out-muscling trained 300 pound muscle-bound wrestlers," to name one reason I dislike anime...out of, like, seven million.

I've seen a lot of shows that I simply loathe. But there's more to anime that shonen superpower bullshit.

Just watch Beck, Mushishi, Black Lagoon, Monster, Dennou Coil or any other actually GOOD anime.

Why dont people like anime

For the record I don't hate it or not like it, I just have trouble getting into it. Granted I like some anime, but I tend to lean toward older titles (Astro-boy, Gatchaman, Robotech, Speed-Racer and Azu-Manga-Daioh) (I also LOVE Hiayo Mizaki films) and every time I see a new one I really want to watch, well I never have time to hunt it down. I also find it kind of nerve-racking finding the "original version" and usually when I come home I wanna good laugh and sad or serious action oriented stuff just doesn't cut it.

It may not apply to me but other reasons might be that culturally it's just alien and it's easy to get the wrong idea about things . . . plus people remember totally ass importations like Pokemon and well yeah.

Why dont people like anime

Because anime has niche appeal? Really, even in Japan manga and anime is considered a very different thing; you'd think it'd just be cartoons to them, but it's not, it's something quite else.

But really, I like Yahtzee's interpretation on it. "Anime isn't a genre. Anime is an art style."

Oversized swords, not to mention when they're covered in bandages.... what the fuck? huge spiky hair, people don't look like that in real life nor will they ever. Facial expressions Loads of cliche crap, like "with enough will power to fight for my friends and home I can defeat someone who was trained, is a veteran at what he does and knows what he's doing even though I'm straight from the most safest place ever", c'mon, doesn't happen in real life and it isn't a good message to send to kids, just like Cinderella (i.e. don't do anything, if your being oppressed just take it and a fairy god mother will come in and make everything all right). Its a cartoon.....

Shitty character dialogue, the characters always seem pretty cut & paste along with the dialogue.

Why dont people like anime

Don't much like cartoons (or, indeed, much of any television) in general. As far as anime is concerned, the art style leaves me cold a lot of the time, so I draw my lines at a good few ghibli films (which my ex had to virtually tie me down to watch), say meh to all else and leave it at that.

Why dont people like anime

I've never understood it, but I don't dislike it. Fans, more than anything, irritate the shit out of me and only turn me away. I'm sure its brilliant, I've yet to fully embrace it though.

Why dont people like anime

I don't see the appeal in anime, other than cute girls with cat ears. My two cents.
Also people, he/she's asking why don't you like anime, not "U DON'T LIKE ANIME! U HERETIC MWHWHAHAHAHHA."

Why dont people like anime

I used to hate anime, but that's only because all I saw of it was 4kids' horrible butcherings of great shows.my friend showed me Gantz and I was hooked. oh and if you don't give anime a shot PATTY WILL MURDER YOUR GIRAFFE!!!!!! <youtube=Gp4iHb3QAWs>

also, you really can't hate ALL anime, that's like saying "Movies suck" or "every book ever written is awful" you can't hate an entire medium.

Why dont people like anime

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!??!?!!?

and I'm under the impression that you have only watched dubbed 4kids anime, which has been heavily altered from the source material.

As a jumping off point, I suggest Fullmetal Alchemist which focuses on a fairly normal main character who has powers but had to suffer greatly to get them. It's a very mature and heartwarming tale at times.

Ha ha ha! I see what you did there!

they racist and think america = god.

Why dont people like anime

It's not bad, i just don't like some of the fans. They the worst sometimes.

In fact, I think i can give it a second chance.

Why dont people like anime

The same reason people don't like video games- they're insecure.
Most of the people on this site like anime or give each anime show a fair chance.

Why dont people like anime

I don't mind some of it, in fact, it's never really been anime that's been my problem, it's the majority/most vocal of the god damn fanbase that I loathe. Oddly enough, the biggest problem I have with them is the antithesis of this thread- why don't you give Western animation a chance? It goes both ways, and I really wish that more people would give more Western animation a chance, before it is killed off by lack of interest.

Why dont people like anime

Well, you're demonstrating why I dislike anime nerds. When I tell them I don't like something they like, they somehow think my opinion is mistaken or uninformed. How can so many people interested in one genre of animation not understand difference of opinion? It started as a growing disinterest but after so many shitstormy arguments that I've come to almost hate the genre entirely. Now, there was a time when I did enjoy anime but I grew bored of it when it began to come apparent that intelligent, mature, and genuinely unique stories were the anomaly, not the norm. With many of my friends being into this stuff I see it from time to time and all I see differing from story to story seems to be setting and powers/weapon. Its always the same characters doing the same things with the same cookie cutter personalities and angst, the same childish sense of humor and sexuality. Not to mention the art style is stagnant, bland, and extremely unoriginal (I was into it while they were in this realistic stint in the 80s and 90s, now all i see is BIGGER EYES, MORE GLOSS)and what is the aversion to drawing male characters? Seriously, it seems that nowadays they just draw a bunch of female characters and throw darts to decide which ones are male.

There are a few that I have enjoyed: many Studio Ghibli films, a lot of the work of the late Satoshi Kon, Cowboy Bebop, Azumanga Daioh, and there is a small warm spot for FLCL, but like I said, these seem to be far outside of the norm. Anyway, stop bugging people that don't like your games and cartoons, its annoying and they like you less for it.

I think the main problem isn't the anime itself but the annoying Japanophile fans who won't shut up about how anime is inherently better than the animation from any other country. They ruin it for everyone.

The main problem, I think, is that both the annoying bits of fandom and the people who hate it on principle are defining anime as a single thing when it's not. It's just animation that happened to come from Japan. I really like Fullmetal Alchemist and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, among others, but that's because I like the STORY and to a lesser extend the art style. There are plenty of anime I'm meh about and plenty I hate, because they're not all the same.

If American studios would stop producing badly drawn and written crap like what's all over Cartoon Network then the interest would be there on its own. In the era of Animaniacs US bred cartoons could be funny and smart and communicate on various levels. Now it's almost all the likes of Aqua Teen and the Squidbillies, which is enough to make anyone look across the ocean for relief.

[I Thank God someone else here agrees with me I was getting my flame shield out The whole "look at any other media" point there Rakakka doesnt hold mate so grats on making yourself look like an idiot

For example, I'll pick another random media form. Music...For the music choice I shall pick Megadeth

Why dont people like anime

a) I wouldnt like to sleep with a member of Megadeth, nor do I post threads about it = 0 b) Last time I checked, Megadeth are just normal people and thuscould not take down something 50 times their size = 0 c)They dont all look the same either = 0 d) Im not sure how they treat women but seeing as how Dave Mustayne is married I assume he treats her properly = 0 There we go. A big fat 0 for everything there

Anime would get a point for each bloody one

while i hate to say this Megadeth is not a form of media (as you in turn are generizing all anime to have a fair comparison you must generalize all music) , they are produce media but they are not a media by themself, from what i understood from his post this was the generalization of the media itself not just specific examples, which kind of renders your post somewhat moot here. im going to argue against some of these points (a, come on.... you can easily rule this one out if were generalizing a media form, have you seen the women you have to choose from in the music industry, and its more oppenly talked about to be quite honest, to the point where people have calenders and posters in there room and openly admit to wanting to sleep with them in general conversation) and (c, you could argue this one here with pop and emo bands looking nearly identical half the damn time and since the industry is flooded with them, well you see where this is going, but ill give you that one as all bands dont in fact look the same in general, just these genres tend to look... well you get the point, (note this is more of a rage against pop and emo bands, not really anything to do with this discussion, to reiterate, you have c)) and (d you see how women are depicted on average in music nowadays, yeh you see my point about that.) B) If i might interject, they have the power of metal behind them... obviously they can defeat any foe. (that parts a joke), i hate to state the obvious, when do musicions fight monsters, isn't this along the lines of comparing a fps and a racing game on its shooting mechanics? or a better example comparing a tomato and a orange for its tomato content,i hate to say this but b in itself is quite unsound in comparision to the media of music. (note this isnt in defence or in favour of anime here, just saying if were generalizing to all media forms, how is this even relevant)

so that 2 out of the 4 you discussed in relation to the music industry, i removed b out of a sheer flawed comparison, which in turn still equates to a reasonable argument against anime in comparison to music.

Why dont people like anime

Because everyone thinks that it's all like Strike Witches and hentai. And everything else is Naruto.
Weeaboos don't help matters either.

Why dont people like anime

I like it, but I haven't seen much, and some animes that I have seen I have consider them wastes of my time. But some others, like NGE, RahXephon, Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing Ultimate, Elfen Lied, Darker than Black and some others I have really enjoyed, and I am sure there are plenty more. The same can be said about videogames, actually.

The only thing I really don't like are TV series. I have enjoyed the series The Street by the BBC and Futurama, but apart from that I haven't really liked anything else. But we'll see later, I do hope there is something truly interesting.

Why dont people like anime

Why dont people like anime

Well people usually don't like animé because they just don't like it.

Everyone has a different taste and that's all...

Why dont people like anime

Same reason I hate Conan O'Brian while everyone in my age range seems to idolize the ground he walks on. People are allowed to dislike things for no explainable reason.

Why dont people like anime

I tried to get into it repeatedly, in fact at one point there was a even cute girl involved who really wanted me to like it, but I gave it six attempts and I just couldn't do it.

Why dont people like anime

I'm just too embarrassed to say I actually like anime but alot of the anime is horrible.

Why dont people like anime

I dunno if this has been said before (too many posts for me to do a quick read through) but part of it is probably because people don't understand part of what's going on in most Anime. It's one thing if an anime is set in a completely different world/universe or set in a time in the Past (since important Cultural information and references are usually explained or Set up during the course of the show), but for the ones that take place in a more realistic world (ones that are set in say, a modern High School in Japan, for example) it becomes harder to understand what's going on due to cultural references (FLCL is the perfect example of this because it was literally filled with cultural Jokes). People who watch Anime and Read Manga frequently don't really have this problem because we're used to seeing some of the Cultural Cliche's that are often used in mangas, so I suppose it would also boil down to how much Anime they watched before they declared that they hated all of it.

If you didn't want to try to make heads or tails of the confusing mess above: People won't like what they can't understand / relate to in any way. That's why SOME people don't like it at least.

Why dont people like anime

Because other people do, and sometimes people are desperate to be as different as possible from the frighteningly hardcore otaku crowd.

So people don't like it simply because they want to be different? nothing to do with no appeal to them? nothing to do with finding it stupid or childish?

Nope, must be desperate.

Why dont people like anime

Because its ugly, voices are annoying, stories are usually retarded. etc etc.

Why dont people like anime

I Rather like it personally

Here are two major reasons why some teens hate anime: 1) Because America royally sucks at dubbing anime about 80-90% of the time. Take a look at One Piece and Naruto, Japan's top two shonen series, and DARE to tell me otherwise.

2) Look at teenage society: jocks, punks, populars, geeks, etc. The essential archetypes basically, wherein nobody wants to leave their comfort zone for fear of total rejection. So while some of the non-otaku types might actually LIKE anime if they gave it a shot (and probably do without even knowing it) practically none of them will dare watch a single show for fear that their confused friends will ostracize them.

Why dont people like anime

It's subject to sturgeons law like any other medium...<.< That is 90% of everything is crap... and anime is no exception... though I do enjoy quite a few anime shows myself...<.<

look at the avatar...

is your avatar from serial experiments lain? O/T: i like anime and everybody has different opinions. I dont like pop music and that is my opinion of that. Seriously this thread is done way too many times use the search button in forums sheesh

a week later and another thread like this will appear

Why dont people like anime

Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z get a pass due to youth nostalgia. But the other stuff people have thrown at me? I loathed it. I just can't get around the fact that I absolutely hate the general art style.

Also, my irrational loathing of Japanese culture plays a part.

Why dont people like anime

Theyer joyless husks..... Oh wait. Sorry. Its 1:46 am. Im suppossed to be kind....ish. Because some people, just dont understand what anime is all about. Chances are they never really gave it a chance, and never looked for an anime they would accually enjoy. Alot of people who dont like anime, only watched a few different shows, and then lumped them all together into one group. A person whos serious probably wont like a show like FLCL. A person who enjoys laughing, and random things, probably wouldent like Juuni Kokuki. Most who dont enjoy anime, dont care for animation as a whole.

Whoop. 1:51. Kind time is over. They just dont enjoy the best things in life. Because theyer brain is mashed taters and they wear itchy underwear. ((or none at all.))

ANIME IS NOT SOME KIND OF PERFECT FORCE FROM SOME KIND OF SUPERIOR CONTINE-

Okay, look, not everyone has the same tastes. Anime is not simply the story that makes, no medium is. Admittedly it's a bit archaic to deny entire mediums so rather I'm going to focus more on genres, anime is a genre, the term anime simply encompasses all films and tv shows which share traits like taking heavy influence from Japan, the animation style, somewhat bizarre takes on humour, drama and bloodhsed and the list goes on.

Some people's tastes simply don't suit this, I'm not all that into anime but I've seen a few hap-hazard episodes of shows and the odd movie that I've enjoyed but at face value anime as a whole (the process of getting into it, the kinds of shows and films I could expect, the fanbase) just doesn't seem that appealing.

If there's an anime based on Mortal Engines, you bet your ass I'm watching it. If there's a thousand bland, complex animes which have characters and situations that don't interest me watching it just because it's anime is pretty stupid. The thing I can't believe is people who eiether exclusively watch/have their interest in anime or people who watch aniem just because it's anime, that's just beyond me.

Emos, that and the fact that 1 out of 5 is watchable, 1 out of 5 of those are good.

I enjoy anime, with that said i am not a anime freak i enjoy anime sometimes kinda like drinking. I mean anime isnt weed.

ITT: A hundred responses saying "Because they have different tastes." OT: I'm going to assume OP meant why there are people who go beyond just disliking it and down right hating it with a seething passion and getting angry at anyone who claims to enjoy the genre. (I know people like this, it's very annoying.) Honestly, I'm not really sure what goes through their minds when they decide they are going to go on parade about something that doesn't even concern them. The above mentioned people also happen to "dislike" Twilight and go to watch the movie in the theater so they can intentionally be loud, giving off spoilers and ruining the movie for everyone. (BTW, I don't like Twilight either, however I hate it so much I don't go to see the movie.)

Anyways, I just go on with my anime watching ways ignoring them. I find I have a lot less stress when I ignoring all the nuisances in my life.

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. I can see older adults not liking it because they think its a kids' cartoon, but I know teenagers who understand the subject matter and still don't like anime. Disregarding hentai, what are your reasons for not liking anime?

The antimation is jarring and jerky to me. Especially the mouths. There's also the silly poses and crap some of them pull, and the silly clothes etc...

IT's not out of some societal pressure. I just don't like them for the most part.

Why dont people like anime

I do sometimes, but most anime is completely over the top sexual inuendo type things. (Purely my experienceh here) so I don't care for most of it. The only one I've watched all the way through multiple times was Roshiro vs Vampire (Or something like that). Don't know why, but I loved it.

Why dont people like anime

Every anime I've seen makes me cringe or laugh for the wrong reasons. I've been exposed to the generic children's shows and I've also seen the deadspace anime movie, the latter of which felt it necessary to show a fat man's overgrown crotch. My exposure to these things and the fact that I dislike Japanese culture in general means I have little love for it.

Edit: Almost forgot to mention, I find that anything but the still images also looks cheap, with characters frozen stiff while a gif animation of an expanding or shrinking bubble hovers somewhere around the region where the mouth should be for whatever character is speaking.

Why dont people like anime

People are allowed different tastes.

Can I hear a /thread over here?

Amen and hallelujah, sister.

OT: I always thought people didn't like anime because of the art style, the negative stereotypes associated with the medium, the content and plot of the shows themselves. But, we can't expect everyone to like it, so it's all good.

Why dont people like anime

I like some anime, I just dislike many of the hardcore fans and the stigma attached. I've lived in Japan, I speak Japanese, my wifes Japanese (the third point being the reason for the first two). I just get...I guess the best word is embarrassed by North Americans using words like "kawaii", "desu", "konnichiwa" and just butchering the pronunciation. Case in point: I know this guy who called himself a Japanese name (his real name was like Mike or something). He was one of those guys who would hunt down all the Japanese checks and try to impress them with his "Japanese" which consisted of phrases he had learned watching anime. He ended up going to Japan on a workingholiday visa and came back to Canada like 6 months (or possibly less) later. He learned that the culture in Japan does not revolve around anime and chances are if you know a bunch of random obscure anime titles and try to pick up girls like that....you will get the same response there as if you did that here.

So thats my rant. Not hating on anime fans, just the ones who don't take the time to really understand the language or culture.

Well, I wouldn't know, because I love anime. I only just started watching, I've seen Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and am now a chunk into Texhnolyze. I'm thinking either Ergo Proxy or Hellsing next, but that's probably gonna change at some point. Either way, Higurashi pwns.

EDIT: I utterly despise kid's animes like Dragonball and Pokemon, for obvious reasons. Not to say that I wouldn't (hypothetically) enjoy a comedy one...

Depends on the situation. For the most part, they get turned off by some of the heavy anime-ish scenarios that...is just annoying for alot. They don't get into it because they miss out on some of the cooler animes, or just can't really get into the artwork. It's..just not their thing, really.

Anime is, to me, Japanese escapism. I don't get it, I'm not Japanese. I like some of the classical themes and recognise stories like Journey to the West but it's still not really my thing. It's just too weird for me + I'm getting too old for cartoons. I did like it as a kid though but I only saw stuff like DB/DBZ(Cool. Superheroes), Fist of the North Star(Whoa bloody), Akira(Which I will never understand) and Uproar/Havoc in heaven (MONKEY!!). As I got a little older anime just stopped being cool. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Havoc in Heaven doesn't counts as anime though because it's Chinese.

I dont like the way of depiction at all. Which makes it hard to give it even a chance, as soon as i see oversized eyes, way too big swords, screaming girls in front of a flashing backround wit a face like this ^U^ i get disgusted and turn it of. Thats it, plain and easy. Plus most lil anime fans telling me that the crap on tv everyday, way past the 300 episodes is anything near watchable. When i worked in a comic book store about 10 years ago, i quite enjoyed to read the First Dragon Ball comics, still dont like the style, but they were quite funny. The series was butchered to nothing, everything remotly offensive was cut out in the worst way, which leaves behind a bad dubbing and a few pieces of eastern imagery that no one here understands or probably even recognises and the rediculous fighting scenes are pumped up to infinity, so that a regular episodes consists out of 3 spoken sentences (animated with 1-5 pictures) and 20 minutes of boring world explosion. I could enjoy Deathnote to a degree, because of the story, at least up to the point L died, the new "antagonists" were just as bad as i expect from anime. I really like a lot "cartoons for children" and animated movies. But most stuff i get presented from anime is way less believable than everything disney or pixar ever made. If you go way over the top, deep into space of ridicule and sillyness, then dont try to tell me you mean it serious at the same time. Thats the whole problem. If you got 12 year old megaheroes with extreme uberpowers, dont let them try to be toughguys, it just doesnt work. And god dammit start a little bit lower, if you have to give them more power every few episodes, then it wont interest me at all if one blow now explodes 3 planets and not 2 any more. You are just trying way too hard to impress.

Thats all aimed at the most lil fanboys popular series, I know there are a lot more and quite some mature ones. But The Bad stuff killed any interest in me to give them a chance despite the art style i dont like.

I used to like anime, just grew tired of it. Well I mainly read manga, and man were there some good manga out there. But then Tokyo Pop started saturating the marked with so much crap, and I found it hard to find mangas I liked. And well honestly the type of mangas I used to like I sort of grew out of. All of that teenage angst was cool when I was a teenager, and had angst. But now I am 27 and honestly is rather angst free. And the anime department followed down the drain with the manga. I still can watch some if I find something I like, but I don't gobble up everything anymore. Best part about anime vs western live action TV: Anime has a beginning and an end, and is often meant to last 1-2 seasons. Where as western TV lasts for as long as the cow can be milked.

PS: Naruto and crap like that does not apply to good anime.

Is it the terrible, formulaic plots? Is it the appalling dialogue? Is it the horrific voice acting? Is it the unlikeable, overdesigned characters? Is the the fact that the fanbase consider it above other cartoons? Is it the stiff, cheap animation? Is it the fact that, as a westerner, any cultural references fall completely flat? Is it the obscene amounts of filler?

The shameless amounts of fanservice?

Why dont people like anime

Not so much the medium, but the crowd. The really weird crowd. The fat pale ones who speak broken Japanese and cosplay even outside of conventions.

Why dont people like anime

I used to love anime, but my love has grown into disgust. For one, the voices tend to rub me the wrong way--the female voices and children's voices in particular make it feel as though someone's pushing a hot poker into my head. Secondly, I don't want to be associated with the stereotypical "anime fan" culture because it grosses me out.

Why dont people like anime

I thought anime were for kids, until I watched Fullmetal Alchemist & Elfen Lied... that pretty much made me a fan of anime.

EDIT: I'll never be judgemental again( a very hard promise tho :S )

A lot(if not most) animes take themselves really effing seriously even though they are the animated equivalent of a brain fart on the short bus.

.... Yeah, that mental image has scarred me for life. Anyways, some anime have lovely stories, and they can be genuinely touching, just like movies. It's just that most adults focus on the "animation" part, which makes them inclined to think that it's just for kids. Or, conversely, they think it's all porn, which tends to turn a lot of people away. I just feel that if people just got over their prejudice a lot more people would watch anime. But I highly doubt that this will ever happen.

Why dont people like anime

I can't believe people are seriously dismissing an entire medium based on a single/few bad anime shows that get shown on western television. That's like reading/watching Twilight and saying all books and movies are bad.

Why dont people like anime

Because they have different tastes than you. I know it's way out there but think about it for a while and it might make sense.

Why dont people like anime

I hate anime series but I like many anime movies... Why I hate anime as series? It is lame, boring, fan service by making girls with massive boobs and making them flash them in every corner (I am male btw, I hate oversexualition of anything...). Stories are dull, characters are mostly dull. Those damm Intro songs that take 1/5th of the episode, stupid midway cuts and after that repeating last scene... And the art quality is... (Because they need to do them fast, yes I know!)

I find many movies to be good tho, like I stated above.

*sighs* See, this is why I don't like stereotypes. Yes, a lot of SERIES are like that. No, it does not mean this applies to ALL OF THEM. I've watched some perfectly amazing anime with extremely good stories, quality animation, and no fan service. RomeoxJuliet Paranoia Agent Bacanno Wolf's Rain

Like all other mediums, the majority of products are poor, and it takes effort to find the good stuff. Far more so if you don't automatically get to see the entire palette on TV, cinemas, and the local blockbuster.

It makes sense that the casual surface observer with no real interest or curiosity would only see the kids shows and hear hysterical reports on tentacle rape orgies, and quickly dismiss it all as either unpleasantly weird or for kids. That some "anime connoisseurs" - who obviously aren't connoisseurs, since a key parameter of that is knowing quality from shit - proclaim everything in it as the second coming of Jesus doesn't really help either.

So lack of exposition and interest, and thus a lack of knowledge on how varied products within the medium are. And/or simply a dislike for the art styles.

Why dont people like anime

Anime is not an medium. It is like saying all cartoons from France are their own medium. Anime is just Japanese animation. It is just a submedium of animation, along with 100% cgi movies in my opinion.

I respect the art but I can't watch it because it makes me feel ill.

Why dont people like anime

This always annoys me, anime is NOT a genre it's a style. It's not like saying you dislike action movies, the content of different anime's varies wildly and while there are genre's within anime which are often formulaic this does not make anime formulaic.

Another way of putting it is saying you dislike all Hollywood films because you hate westerns, which makes very little sense if you know anything about Hollywood or the variety of films which are made there.

Well you certainly had enough vile and venom but your point seems to have the curious problem of being a list of generalisations which could be applied to almost any form of media. Simply replace 'anime' in your post with some other popular entertainment say the twilight novels for instance and you might as well be deriding them, or anything else which people enjoy and you or others may not.

So while you might have a myriad of other reasons sitting in your bank of reason, might I suggest you actually post something of substance next time? For example if you don't like something simply saying so is far more honest and useful than mud slinging in an attempt to justify your venom.

You are absolutely correct. They ARE generalizations. The point of my post was to illustrate my personal reasons for dislike of it. While it is very true that you can apply that to all sorts of media, hell, lets for the sake of argument say "FPS shooters". Thing of it is is that those other media may well be the same way, but personally I might favor the way that another form of media is repetitive compared to the ways anime is repetitive. My point is this. They are generalizations because Anime is liked by a lot of people, and some of those same people are likely to take offense at saying something negative toward their favored media. A point that has seemingly been illustrated, be it intentionally or inadvertently. It is also harder to pick apart generalizations than specifics. I mean if I wanted to say something like "Anime is reflective of a culture that has a lost sense of spirituality and is indoctrinating a generation of children outside of that culture to be equally as spiritually indifferent" only to be picked apart by anime fans, quoted 6 ways from sunday with 1200 different examples out of 10k that illustrate how faith is encouraged with basically no other reason than trying to sway opinion and accept the initial opinion posted was wrong after all. That would be counter productive to what the subject of the thread.

what are your reasons for not liking anime?

So, Sorry, I used generalizations in the hope that my statements would not be ground down to troll fodder.

Edit: Given that an abundance of the posts have been in praise of anime, I felt it was sort of relevant to give reasons why I hold that opinion. Generalized or not, they were ample enough to get the point across.

Why dont people like anime

Why don't I like anime? I'm in my 30's. Even the anime that I don't consider to be "kids stuff" will generally put me off with the art style, the voice acting, the storyline etc etc. I rarely watch films or TV anyway so anime is just part of a long list of motion pictures that I don't like. Although I can actually stomach western live action stuff even if I don't actively like it, anime repulses me.

No the point you have got across is that you both dislike anime and that you don't wish to describe why you don't like it and instead chose to vent your proverbial spleen in this thread much like the trolls you also deride.

That and you seem to have made yourself a rather ironic justification 'the troll will get me' for making what could be easily mistaken for a troll post.

Why dont people like anime

Well, as a person who cannot watch most Japanese cartoons, I am here to answer your question. Japan is crazy, insane, has unhealthy fixations and even they know it. I do not enjoy stories about high schools (I hated my own high school, why would I want to watch someone else' high school drama?), prepubescent incarnate adolescent power fantasies (seriously, I don't know how much Karate he knows, a ten year old is no match for a grown man), women who act like women act in Japanese cartoons, giant robots (with the possible exception of Battletech, but that's neither here nor there), or people who get special powers by CHANGING CLOTHES (a la Sailor Moon). The whole scene is populated with silly people doing silly things for silly reasons; which would be bad enough, but they appear to want me to take them seriously.

Also, I used to be able to get through a not completely terrible Japanese cartoon without gnawing my own leg off, but what really turned me off altogether was Japanese cartoonaphiles. These people are some of the most obnoxious, smelly, socially maladjusted shut ins I have ever met. So, that's why I don't like Japanese cartoons, or games, or comics.

Why dont people like anime

I enjoy a good anime every now and then, but the super-hardcore fans really kill it for me sometimes. Especially the ones that seem to think it's their God-given duty to tell everyone and the mother about how "inferior" Western animation is.

Why dont people like anime

1) I don't like the art style because it looks really lazy and cheap (even in its native language). This art style pervades all manner of animes. It isn't identical among all anime (that would be like saying Pixar and Dreamworks look identical; they don't), but most of the time the elements I dislike about anime are present.

Like the lack of good shaders. The abusive amounts of key frames, panned shots, and stock repeat animation.

The fuck-awful harpy-hybrid freakshows they get to do at least ONE of the female roles (like it's required by law to have a screeching pre-pubescent **** in every bloody show). And of course, the bloody padding...so after I sit through 20 minutes of screeching and stock footage, the plot might have moved up maybe one page. The pacing issues can be atrocious in ways I seldom see in other genres. 2) The mass-production business material. It has been brought to my attention that many of these shows are following a Manga. This creates a time discrepancy. The shows have to pad out their episodes because writing the Manga takes FAR LONGER to publish in real time than the cash-in show does. As a result, you get episodes that are literally nothing but filler and padding (DBZ is infamous for this). Just as an experiment, I read a few mangas for comparison. It's sad that the artwork and overall presentation is BETTER THAN THE BLOODY SHOW'S. How the hell do you do that?! I guess the networks won't continue to host your show if you miss a week. Contractual obligations etc. That's my guess. 3) I abhor the assholes who dare to tell me that it's the best artwork or animation out there. You're not only being pretentious, but you're also blinding yourself to other mediums. I at least tried to give anime a chance, and with maybe 3-4 exceptions, I could not bear to watch it. You can tack on an "In my opinion" to everything I wrote there if you must be anal about it.

Most of this is a rant, but that basically sums up my experience with anime in the last 12 years.

All in my opinion of course.

Summary: I don't like anime.

Why dont people like anime

Different strokes for different folks. Some people just can't get past the art style, or the animation design.

Personally, I love a nice, deep, anime like Spice and Wolf or FMA: Brotherhood. Some of the stories you find in a good anime are just as good, if not better, than those found in other creative outlets.

Why dont people like anime

i like it, looking for a new one to watch actually but don't want to do yet another recommendation thread. got one in mind anyway, Kuroshitsuji (AKA Black Butler). anyone seen it? someone mentiioned it a while ago and said they really liked it.

hmmm, that doesn't sound good...WIKIPEDIA....OH DEAR GOD!!!!

Well, i guess there are a lot of reasons that people don't like anime. I don't like anime because i don't like the art style, and the stupid over the top expressions and reactions. Those are the main reasons anyway.

Why dont people like anime

The reasons I don't watch anime any more is because; 1. The fans that admit it are usually obnoxious. (See college students to take japanese language and culture classes and call each other "san" and "chan") Keep in mind this doesn't apply to everyone. I'm a good example of a fairly moderate anime fan. 2. It's expensive. 3. There is a lot of stuff out there to sift through to get to what you're going to like. So, it's hard for me to find new things. Since I don't have a lot of anime fan friends, it's hard to borrow their stuff and I'm not about to endlessly troll the internet for episodes here and there that may or may not have subtitles, be full episodes, etc.

As far as converting people into anime fans, see scary socially retarded enthusiasts that would try to convince you in the first place. Anime has got quite the stigma attached to it.

probably best you just watch it and figure it out

hmmm, that doesn't sound good...WIKIPEDIA....OH DEAR GOD!!!!

yeah sorry about that. I've probably spoiled it a bit

I find it weird, personally, and those who watch that kind of thing are usually the type of people I can't stand.

Yeah, I'm that kid who was a dick to 85% of you Escapists in high school. My bad.

The more anime I watch, the more I find I dislike the majority of it. If I say 'I like anime' oftentimes people misunderstand me and start blathering on about shows I absolutely abhor. Most of the stories I find good are still not as complex and well thought out as any good book, the voice acting is not always at its best, and the level of creativity is usually low. Character wise. . .finding mature characters with a good degree of characterization is like finding a needle in a hay stack. It rarely happens, and when it does it was probably based off of a manga. Most anime bores me after a few episodes (or partway through a movie) because I do not find the story interesting or engaging enough, and the characters are not relatable (or get mired in needlessly dramatic shenanigans that. . .ugh).

I like anime as much as I like any sort of video media, which is to say the vast majority can go hop in a toilet and get flushed. But, that's only my opinion and I can understand why others like it. For the most part, I'll prefer to go read a book. . .unless I'm in the mood to try to find another needle. You'd think by now I'd realize it's just not going to happen that often.

Why dont people like anime

i like it, looking for a new one to watch actually but don't want to do yet another recommendation thread. got one in mind anyway, Kuroshitsuji (AKA Black Butler). anyone seen it? someone mentiioned it a while ago and said they really liked it.
