Nubian Desertnoun an arid sandstone plateau in northeastern Sudan between the Nile and the Red Sea Nubian Desert The Nubian Desert is in the eastern region of the Sahara Desert, spanning approximately 400,000 km² of northeastern Sudan between the Nile and the Red Sea. The arid region is rugged and rocky and contains some dunes, it also contains many wadis that die out before reaching the Nile. The average annual rainfall in the Nubian Desert is less than 5 inches. The native inhabitants of the area are the Nubians. The Nile River goes through most of its cataracts while traveling through the Nubian Desert. This is right before the Great Bend of the Nile. The Nubian Desert affected the civilization in ancient Egypt in many ways.
Africa's earliest known archaeoastronomical megalith was erected in Nabta Playa in the Nubian Desert in southern Egypt.
The town of Abidiya is located nearby.
This desert is the only habitat for the critically endangered palm Medemia argun, which only appears rarely in some oases in the desert.

Nubian Desert, eastern region of the Sahara Desert, c.157,000 sq mi (407,000 sq km), NE Republic of Sudan, NE Africa, between the Nile and the Red Sea. The arid region, largely a sandstone plateau, has numerous wadis flowing toward (but never reaching) the Nile, whose great bends are entrenched in the western part of the region. The surface is a plateau descending in steps from east to west from 1,000 m to 350 m. On the plateau are inselbergs rising to 1,240 m in the west. The ancient rocks of the Nubian-Arabian Shield and Nubian sandstones are exposed in the east and covered by sand in the west. The plateau is dissected by a dense network of dry riverbeds. The annual precipitation is about 25 mm, and the sparse vegetation consists primarily of xerophytic grasses and prickly shrubs and semishrubs. There is livestock herding.
