What is the acceleration of a car which starts from rest and acquires a velocity of 40 m/s in 8 s?

The Correct Answer is 50 m.

Concept:

  • The average acceleration for a given interval is defined as the velocity change for that particular interval.
  • Unlike acceleration, for a given interval the average acceleration is determined.
  • The average acceleration of an object over a period of time is its velocity change divided by the length of that period.

a = Δv/Δt

Δv = Change in velocity

Δt = The duration of the period

Calculations:

Given that,

The initial velocity u = 0

The final velocity v = 72 km/h = (72) × 5/18 = 20 m/s

Time t = 5 sec,

To find the distance(S) we need acceleration first,

Acceleration is given by,

a = Δv/Δt

a = (20 - 0)/5

a = 4 m/s2

To find the distance 2nd equation of motion,

S = ut + (1/2)at2

S =

S = 50 m

The distance travelled by car is 50 m.
