Surprisingly, it seems pretty difficult to Google for this information. Nearly every site just mentions the name trick. and since that only works once, I don't want to "waste" the name until I have a good Eevee to use it on, right now I just want to evolve any Eevee just to fill my Pokedex.From what I understand, another way to get them is to walk 10km with them as your buddy, and without removing them from being your buddy, evolve them. What I want to know is, if this guarantees an Espeon or Umbreon based on the time of day, or just simply adds the possibility on top of the existing evolutions and thus you still have to hope it doesn't become a Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon.

And as for time of day, when does the game consider it "day" or "night"? Is it a set time period globally (I doubt it since that would make some awkward time periods to be considered day or night in some timezones), or is it a set period per time time? Or does it even change based on when it's daylight and dark on each day?

Yes, guarantees evos, and is based on the day/night settings in your game. your local area determines night and day, its obvious.

also you can switch your buddy anytime in case you want to walk something else until your desired time. Just your eevee with 10km+ walked must be buddy at evo time.

You mean Espeon, not espion.

And even so, at the final sentance you must have ment Umbreon.

I set an Eevee as my buddy, never switched it out the entire time, had about 10.4KM or so walked, and even evolved it from the buddy screen..... and it turned into a Flareon >.<

That's weird, did you took your eevee out from your buddy list any time during your 10K walk? I got my Espeon following that rule. (Fun act, after I left the screen it was nighttime)

What is the difference by doing tbe names first. I did the names for the dex with the first 2 eevees I caught. Only yesterday evolved a good Umbreon via the walking. Don't mind doing that as a break from Chansey, Snorlax and Mareep buddies.

Did you get 2 candy from him? I heard if you don't receive the 2 candy as well as the 10km it doesn't work.

No it actually doesn't go without saying. The game will sometimes bug out and not always give you the 2nd candy right away.

If you evolve an Eevee while it is your buddy pokemon and you have walked at least 10km with it, it will turn to Umbreon during the night and to Espeon during the day. But what are the exact timeframes here, i.e. what times are considered day and night by Pokemon Go? I haven't been able to find an exact answer to this.
