What does the A stand for in the ACE Mover method approach when working with clients?

A successful personal trainer can do more than just design exercise programs and teach the right movement techniques. In order to optimally support customers, an effective personal trainer must also be able to coach people in adopting and adhering to health-related behavior changes and at the same time promoting the conditions under which motivation thrives.

The ACE Mover Method ™ is at the heart of ACE's customer-centric approach. This philosophy positions ACE Certified Professionals as effective guides for behavior changes for their customers. Simply put, the ACE Mover method is a philosophy that focuses on how to effectively address customer engagement and retention regardless of the health or fitness area in which you work.

Proper implementation of the ACE mover method sets ACE certified professionals in the industry. For example, personal training involves much more than programming sets, repetitions, and practice duration. At its core, it's about motivating customers to adopt and adhere to behavior changes that have a positive impact on their health, fitness and general quality of life.

Does the ACE Mover method also replace the theories and principles you have studied about behavior change in the ACE textbooks when you are preparing for your certification exam? Not at all. In fact, the ACE mover method is based on some of the basic behavior change principles that you may already be familiar with, including positive psychology, motivational interviews, self-determination theory, and the trans-theoretical model of behavior change. You will undoubtedly recognize some of its components as you learn more about the ACE mover method.

The ACE Mover method is based on the following principles:

  • Every professional interaction is customer-oriented and recognizes that customers are the leading experts in themselves. You may be a physical activity expert and make healthy decisions, but you have no answers for a customer unless you are cooperative and consider each customer's expertise.
  • Powerful open questions and active listening are used in every session with customers. No one likes to be told what to do. In fact, people often feel defensive and uncomfortable when they feel they have to make changes that do not match their personal values and beliefs. When you work to empower a customer to make behavior changes, few things are more counterproductive than when they feel defensive and uncomfortable. By asking the right questions and using active listening skills, you can learn what the customer appreciates and then work with him or her to develop a plan that is more likely to be effective and meaningful.
  • Customers are truly seen as resourceful and capable of change. If you focus on a customer's strengths instead of looking for deficits, it quickly becomes clear that the customer already has a lot that is necessary for a successful behavior change. Concentrating on what is “right” with the client and not on what is “wrong” is an element of positive psychology that helps you and the client find the best way forward together.

It is important to note this The ACE mover method is supported by research and is an essential element of evidence-based practice, which is the hallmark of ACE textbooks. As with the practice and programming recommendations that ACE functions are based on expertly verified evidence, the ACE mover method and the theories and models for behavior change on which it is based are based on peer review evidence. Be sure to read the suggested reading below to learn more.

The ACE Mover method is about establishing a customer-centric approach to working with customers that is truly empowered and personalized, based on the values, beliefs, and goals of each individual with whom you work. What more can you ask for as a health and exercise professional than clients who are successful on their own terms and in a way that is important to their personal lifestyle change trips?

Health and fitness professionals have the opportunity to join allied health professionals in addressing the major epidemic of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Although exercise has been proven to be beneficial to brain health and cognitive functioning, precise exercise prescriptions are not clear to the general public or those in the health and fitness industries. This lack of clarity has led to further confusion and leaves clients, patients, and caregivers wondering if they are doing all that is possible to stave off cognitive decline. This session will review the research on how certain modalities of exercise can differentially affect the brain, and will provide an initial framework for the assessment and programming of cognitive health within exercise programs.

Everyone has goals they want to attain. Modern-day wisdom indicates that to reach their goals, especially for health and fitness, people need to simply double down on their motivation and willpower. Yet, observation and statistics on the health of our country clearly demonstrate that this approach is not working—not even a little bit! This session translates a half century of behavior-change science into applied techniques so fitness professionals can create real value and lasting results, including how and where these results are delivered.
