The course dealsspecifically with the challenges and issues that relate to coaching at the interscholasticlevel and in our nation’s schools. Throughout the course, we will use the termteacher/coach. This is deliberate and emphasizes the educational mission ofinterscholastic athletics. It highlights your role as a teacher first and coach second,regardless of whether you are a certified teacher or one of the rapidly growing numberof members of the public who are choosing to give back to their community by coachinginterscholastic athletics. As a teacher first and coach second, you will ensure that thestudent’s participation in sport at the interscholastic level is first and foremost aneducational experience.The content of this course has been designed to provide you aroad map for individual student development and team success.Most importantly, thecourse was developed to help you understand the role athletics should play in theeducational mission of our schools. Your decision to participate in the NFHS CoachEducation program demonstrates a high degree of commitment and investment in thelives of our nation’s youth.Interscholastic athletics can be a wonderful vehicle to teachpositive life-skills and learn important lessons for life. But athletics also have thepotential to be a negative experience that can teach young people undesirablebehaviors and values. There is nothing inherently good or bad about interscholasticathletics. It is up to you as the teacher/coach to create a favorable, developmentallyappropriate experience for your students.As a teacher/coach, you have been entrustedwith a gift: the opportunity to help your students maximize their physical, social,personal, and psychological development and help them establish a Game Plan for Life.I urge you to please, please meet that obligation before all others.About the AuthorDr. Darren Treasure is the author of Fundamentals of Coaching and wasthe lead consultant in the initial development of the NFHS coach education program.
