How to transfer photos from SD card to computer Windows 7

Importing pictures of products, services or advertisements to Windows Photo Gallery allows you to share them with clients and customers via email or social networking sites. When you plug an SD card into your computer, the PC recognizes it as a portable hard drive. This allows you to transfer photos to Windows Photo Gallery quickly and easily using an import wizard.

  1. Plug the SD card into the SD card slot on your PC and wait for the computer to recognize it as a portable hard drive. The SD card slot is located on the side or front of the computer, depending on whether you're using a desktop or laptop.

  2. Click the "Start" button, and then click "Computer" to launch Windows Explorer. Locate your SD card's drive in the "Devices with Removable Storage" section to verify the computer detected it.

  3. Click the "Start" button, type "Photo Gallery" in the search field, and then press "Enter" to launch Windows Photo Gallery.

  4. Click the "Home" tab, and then click "Import Photos" to launch the "Import Photos and Videos" dialog box.

  5. Select the SD card's drive and click the "Import" button. Click the "More Options" button if you want to select additional options such as a location to import the photos to, and formats for folders and file names.

  6. Click the "Review, organize and group items to import" option to organize photos in groups, and include tags and names. Click the "Import all new items now" option to import all the new photos on the SD card. Click "Add tags," include one or more tags separated by semicolons, and then press "Enter."

  7. Click "Import" to complete the process.

One of my client’s today did not know how to transfer photos from her computer to a SD Card so she could utilize her digital picture frame she received at Christmas. She was amazed and relieved at how simple the steps were once I walked her through the process.

This method works for transferring any type of file from your computer to an external drive like a USB flash drive, external hard drive, or a memory card like shown here.

  1. Insert your memory card into the computer (or card reader…note too that newer digital cameras can act as a card reader as well)
  2. Click Start –> My Computer
  3. Double-click your memory card
  4. Click Start –>  My Pictures (Pictures in Vista and Windows 7)
  5. Position the two windows side-by-side (see video below or click here for complete tutorial on using the title bar)
  6. Drag photos from your Pictures folders to external drive (Learn how to select multiple files here or here.)

How to transfer/copy files from PC to SD card in Windows 7/8/10/11

I’m going to show you three different solutions to transfer files from PC to SD card in Windows 7. These solutions apply to Windows 11/10/8 as well. If you have a large number of files to be transferred, then Solution 3 is recommended.

Solution 1: Transfer files from PC to SD card by Cut/Copy and Paste

These are simply operations and are familiar to most computer users:

1. Connect the SD card to your computer and make sure it is detected.

2. Press “Win + E” to open “Computer”. Locate the files you want to move from your computer.

3. Cut/copy and paste the desired files from your computer to your SD card. You can also drag and drop items.

4. Safely disconnect your SD card.

Tips: If you use “Cut and Paste” method, the files you choose will only be saved on your SD card, thus releasing space on the local disk; if you use “Copy and Paste” method, you will get a duplicate of chosen files, thus keeping a backup on your computer.

Although it seems easy, it will be a tough work to transfer a large number of files by “Cut/Copy and Paste”, especially when the files are located in different folders.

Solution 2: Copy files from PC to SD card using CMD

Some users prefer Command Prompt operations. Follow the guidance below:

1. Connect the SD card to your computer and make sure it is detected.

2. Press “Win + R” to open the Run dialogue. Type cmd and press Enter or click “OK” to open Command Prompt.

3. Type cd c:\Pictures and press Enter. “c:\Pictures” indicates the location of the files to be transferred.

4. Type copy tulips.jpg f: and press Enter. “tulips.jpg” indicates the file name with file extension and “f:” is the drive letter of the SD card.

Tips: • To transfer more than one file, you can repeat the “copy” command. • If there are spaces in the file's name, you need to put quotation marks around them. For example, a file named "tulips in spring.jpg" would be tulips" "in" "spring.jpg in Command Prompt.

5. Type exit and press Enter to exit Command Prompt. Safely disconnect your SD card.
