How to armor in minecraft

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to put on and use armor with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, you need to wear armor to protect you from taking damage in the game when fighting mobs. Let's explore how to use armor.

Background

Once you have played Minecraft for a while, you will start battling mobs. Now is a good take to craft and wear armor to protect you in the game.

There are different types of armor that you can craft - diamond, iron, golden, stone, and leather. Each of these types provides a different level of protection. For example, diamond armor provides the greatest protection but is the hardest to craft because of the difficult items that you need to gather in the game to make the diamond armor.

Armor Items to Wear

In Minecraft, these are the types of items that you can wear as armor to protect you from attacks:

Steps to Put on Armor

1. Open your Inventory

In this example, we are going to show you show to put on a set of diamond armor - diamond helmet, diamond chestplate, diamond leggings, and diamond boots.

If you don't have any armor in your inventory, you can quickly make some with these crafting recipes for armor.

To put on armor, you first need to open your inventory. The game control to open your inventory depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the E key to open the inventory menu.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), tap on the button with 3 dots to open your inventory and then tap on the button with the picture of an iron chestplate.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the Y button to open your inventory.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the

  • For Education Edition, press the E key to open your inventory.

The instructions for how to put on armor varies slightly based on your game mode - Survival versus Creative.

2. Put on Armor

The instructions are different to put in armor in different game modes - Survival vs Creative mode.

How to put on Armor in Survival Mode

If you are playing in Survival mode and have your inventory open, you will see a picture of your character with four boxes that allow you to change the armor that you are wearing.

Move the armor that you want to wear from your inventory to the boxes to the left of your character.

The diamond helmet goes in the helmet box. The diamond chestplate goes in the chestplate box. The diamond leggings go in the leggings box. The diamond boots go in the boots box.

How to Put on Armor in Creative Mode

This wikiHow teaches you how to make armor on the computer version of Minecraft, Minecraft Pocket Edition on mobile, or on Minecraft for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. You cannot craft chainmail armor.

Part 1 Part 1 of 2:Gathering Armor Materials

    1

Decide on a type of armor. You can create the following types of armor in Minecraft:[1]

    • Leather armor - Reduces all damage by 28 percent. It's the weakest armor in Minecraft, but it requires no smelting and no special tools (e.g., pickaxes) to obtain.
    • Iron armor - Reduces all damage by 60 percent.
    • Gold armor - Reduces all damage by 44 percent. Since iron is infinitely more plentiful than gold, gold armor is a comparative waste of time and resources.
    • Diamond armor - Reduces all damage by 80 percent. Requires no smelting. Objectively the best armor in Minecraft, but extremely difficult to create due to diamonds' rareness.

Gather your armor's resources. You will need 24 pieces of your chosen material to create a full set of armor:

    • Leather - Kill cows to pick up their leather. You may need to kill more or fewer than 24 cows depending on how much leather each drops.
    • Iron - Mine iron blocks, which resemble grey stone with orange speckles, with a stone pickaxe or better. You will need to mine 24 iron blocks to get 24 iron ore.
    • Gold - Mine gold blocks, which resemble grey stone with yellow speckles, with an iron pickaxe or better. You will need to mine 24 gold blocks to get 24 gold ore. Gold blocks are typically found deep underground.
    • Diamond - Mine diamond blocks, which resemble grey stone with light-blue speckles, with an iron or diamond pickaxe. You will need 24 diamond ore. Diamond is very deep underground, and very rare.

Gather the resources to smelt materials. If you're creating iron or gold armor, you will need the following items:

    • Cobblestone - Mine 8 grey cobblestone. You'll use this for a furnace.
    • Fuel - Either chop 6 wooden blocks down to create 24 planks, or mine at least 10 coal blocks. Coal is represented by grey blocks with black spots.
    • If you're crafting leather or diamond armor, skip ahead to crafting your armor.

Tips

  • You can't mix and match material in each armor piece, but mixing and matching armor pieces works fine.

  • Each armor has a different max level it can be enchanted to, with gold being the highest at 25 and iron being the lowest at 9.

  • Diamond, while the rarest material, is the most efficient when comparing number of materials used to amount of armor obtained.

Warnings
