Why is my dog not drinking water and throwing up

Dogs may throw up after drinking water for a variety of reasons. Dogs may truly vomit (evacuating the contents of their stomach) or they may simply regurgitate (bringing back liquid or food because they have not swallowed it properly).

Regurgitating water soon after drinking may mean a problem with the oesophagus (food pipe). Vomiting water after drinking and not eating usually indicates a problem with the stomach or intestines.

What causes a dog to throw up?

Dogs can throw up for many reasons. If your dog drinks lots of water, especially very cold water or after exercise, this can fill the stomach too quickly and cause them to throw some of it back up straight away. If your dog does this a lot, you can slow down your dog drinking by placing a large, clean stone in their water bowl, so they have to lap around it, or give them a small amount to drink at a time.

Your dog may also drink a lot of water if they are feeling unwell (nauseous) to try to make themselves sick. This is also why dogs sometimes eat grass. It can be a dog’s way to clear out toxins, if they have eaten something that is causing a stomach upset.

There are lots of more serious reasons why dogs vomit, including infections, toxins, blockages, metabolic disease (such as liver or kidney failure) and even cancer. If you have a large breed dog, such as a Doberman or Great Dan, who's throwing up after drinking water this could mean a twisted stomach and is an emergency.

When should you be concerned about your dog throwing up?

If a dog throws up all the water that they drink, they will quickly become dehydrated. If they are not able to keep water down, they may need treatment to stop them from vomiting and sometimes fluids by a drip to rehydrate them. If your dog is not eating, losing weight, is dull and lethargic, or has abdominal (tummy) pain or bloating, this can indicate a more serious problem and you should contact a vet immediately.

Can tap water make my dog sick?

Water from unclean sources can contain bacteria and other infectious organisms that can make dogs (and people) sick. It’s important to give your dog clean, fresh, potable water, which is suitable for humans to drink too. Water that is not meant for humans to drink, or that is from muddy puddles, can cause illness. Stagnant water is particularly hazardous to your dog’s health and you should discourage them from swimming in or drinking from stagnant pools.

What can dogs drink other than water?

Dogs can drink special rehydration fluids, which can help them to get better after vomiting or diarrhoea. Some dogs are lactose intolerant, so dairy products are not recommended. Giving dogs flavoured water, such as chicken stock, can encourage them to drink, but these can contain high salt levels and so must be used with caution.

You should fast your dog (as long as it's not a puppy or tiny or elderly) to help its stomach recover after being upset.

My Dog Is Vomiting!

If your dog only vomits once and then stops, don't worry. Sometimes he or she may have eaten too fast, or perhaps they might have an upset tummy after eating something strange while "dumpster-diving" or otherwise rooting around in weird foods.

If your dog vomits several times, however, and looks like they might continue to do so, you need to take action. Here are some steps to follow.

1. Fast Your Dog

Take away your dog's food so that their stomach can rest. Though there is some controversy about this, a healthy dog can easily go without food for 24 hours.

If you feel better about taking your dog to the vet right away, that is certainly okay. The exam or lab work might reveal an abnormality that can be treated immediately.

2. Be Careful About Your Dog Drinking Water

Make sure your dog is not drinking and filling up on water; if they are drinking, they are not fasting. Be sure to close the bathroom door and put the seat down!

If your dog is old, very tiny, or has other health problems, keeping them without water is NOT a good idea. An old dog should be taken to the vet as soon as they start vomiting.

3. After the Vomiting Stops, Let the Dog Have Some Bland Food and Small Amounts of Water

If vomiting stops after a simple fast, they can once again be given water. You can do this by giving the dog ice cubes to lick, and then small amounts of water if the dog holds them down with no problems. You can also offer bland food — white rice with boiled hamburger or chicken breast is a good diet to use when it is time to resume feeding. A 75% rice to 25% low-fat meat (boiled low-fat hamburger) is a good ratio to follow.

If they are holding everything down, you should feed the dog small meals four or five times a day for a few days, and then switch back to regular food slowly.

I do not recommend you give any over-the-counter medications to stop the vomiting. If the dog needs medication, they should be examined before you attempt any kind of treatment.

4. If the Dog Continues to Vomit, Take Them to Be Seen by a Vet

If your dog continues to vomit even on an empty stomach, is experiencing other symptoms like lethargy, or starts vomiting again as soon as you begin feeding them, you need to take them to your vet for a physical exam and lab work. Do this as soon as possible since some problems, like bloat, need to be taken care of as soon as possible. If it is not treated, the dog will die.

Take some of the dog's vomit (in a small plastic bag) with you if possible and be sure to tell the vet if you have seen any blood or black color in the vomit.

Simple Reasons Your Dog Might Vomit

These are some of the less serious conditions that may cause your dog to vomit. In these scenarios, your dog will usually just vomit once and then stop vomiting as soon as its stomach calms down.

  1. Upset stomach (gastritis) from eating garbage or spoiled food
  2. Eating too fast
  3. Eating toxic grass or plants
  4. Exercising after eating
  5. Car sickness
  6. Sudden diet change
  7. Post-operative nausea

If your dog just vomits once but otherwise appears healthy, it's likely they're OK and just had an upset tummy.

Why Is My Dog Still Vomiting, Even on an Empty Stomach?

If your dog is still vomiting even after not eating or drinking anything, it's a sign that something more serious may be happening and you should seek medical attention for your dog immediately. This is especially true if your dog is lethargic, refuses food, or has a tender abdomen.1

  1. Poisoning: Some poisons will cause vomiting. They need to be treated right away.
  2. Bloat: If the dog's stomach is swollen and filled with gas, it will become extremely painful. The dog will try to vomit but nothing will come out. If your dog is trying to vomit but nothing is coming out, go to his vet.
  3. Stomach ulcers or cancer: Your dog might be vomiting up fresh blood (red) or digested blood (black). If you notice “coffee grounds” in your dog's vomit, that is a sign that she is bleeding a lot. You need to go to the vet to find out why.
  4. Blocked intestine: Your dog can have a blockage from eating something (like a rubber ball) or might even be blocked by a piece of his own intestine (intussusception). Other symptoms of intestinal blockage include difficulty defecating and abdominal pain. Your vet will have to take x-rays to find out if this is what's happening.
  5. Infection: Parvovirus is the most common—its symptoms also include fever and diarrhea. There are also several other types of infection that will cause a dog to vomit. If the dog continues to vomit and you do not get help, it will become even sicker and could possibly die.
  6. Neurological or psychological issues: Some neurological issues can cause your dog to vomit, such as a brain tumor, meningitis, middle ear problem, anxiety, or fear. Other warning signs include stumbling or lack of balance, head shaking, and vision problems.

What Kinds of Problems Might Show Up on a Physical Exam at the Vet?

  1. Pancreatitis: Your dog is especially at risk for this if it is obese or at least has a history of eating fatty garbage. Symptoms (aside from vomiting) include a painful belly and loss of appetite. Besides the blood work, your vet will recommend x-rays to check the pancreas. To reduce the risk of pancreatitis, owners of obese dogs should start their pets on a weight loss program.
  2. Kidney disease: If your dog ate poison or is old and suffering from kidney failure, they will start vomiting because the toxins in their body are making them sick. Your vet can find this out with a lab test.
  3. Liver failure: There will probably be a lot of signs besides vomiting. Your dog's gums will be pale, and then yellow. Its belly might be swollen, and they might even have seizures. If you notice these symptoms, as well as the vomiting, you need to take your dog to the vet for an exam and lab work.
  4. Diabetes: Your dog can develop diabetes for several reasons, and one of them is pancreatitis that happens over and over, destroying the pancreas over time. Their pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin, and they can develop a condition called ketoacidosis, and will start vomiting as a result. Other symptoms of diabetes include extreme thirst, frequent urination, and sweet breath.
  5. Ruptured bladder: Sometimes a dog can have a ruptured bladder after being hit by a car. They would not start vomiting until a few days later when the toxins get into the bloodstream. The vet will be able to tell this from the exam, blood work, and x-rays.
  6. Pyometra: This is an infection of the uterus that your dog can get if it's a female that isn't spayed. If she has it, she will drink a lot of water, have discharge from her vagina, and eventually start vomiting. The vet will notice abnormalities on the exam and the blood work. This is a life-threatening condition, so she will need surgery.

If your dog isn't acting like itself, and is continuously vomiting, see your vet.

Do Your Research to Help Your Pet

There are a lot of things to think about if your dog is vomiting—and there are many other abnormalities that you might not even notice, but that your vet would pick up during a physical exam. If you are worried about your dog being too old, weak, or depressed, or especially if she is vomiting after you stop feeding her, take her in right away.

Vomiting may be nothing to worry about, or it may be a sign of something serious. It is your job to find out why.

Wishing you and your dog good health!

Questions & Answers

Question: My 12-year-old dog threw up and peed in three different places around the house last night. Over the course of the day, she threw up bile (white/yellow foam) three times. She has not been eating, but will occasionally drink water. She is having a hard time getting up and walking around. She walks stiffly and very slow. What should I do?

Answer: You are describing a very sick dog. I cannot diagnose this over the internet. Her temperature needs to be taken, her hydration checked, her lungs need to be listened to, and her stomach palpated.

The only thing you can do for your dog at this point is to take her to a vet. If you have an emergency clinic in your area, this certainly justifies a visit. If not, get her to your vet the first thing in the morning.

Question: My four-months-old dog is vomiting white foam. He is also not eating or drinking much water. What could be the problem?

Answer: You do not give any indication how long this has been going on nor if there are any other symptoms. What is his vaccination status?

I cannot tell you what is wrong without more information. If the vomiting continues, you need to have him seen by your vet before he gets too sick.

Question: My puppy has vomited eleven times. What should I do?

Answer: If your young puppy has vomited that many times he or she needs immediate medical attention. Take him to your vet if it is during the day, or to an emergency clinic if it is night.

Question: My two-month-old toy poodle vomited an earbud and now has a mushy stool. She only vomited once, though, and she’s been eating and drinking normally. Should I be concerned?

Answer: With most dogs, it would be safe to assume that they just have an upset stomach. With a two-month-old toy poodle, however, it is a good idea to be concerned. They are so small and can become hypoglycemic and dehydrated so fast, that if she vomits again, she could get sick very quickly.

If this were my puppy, I would take her in for a visit in the morning. If the exam is okay she will not need any x-rays, however, if she is still sick, it would be a good idea to do x-rays to look for a linear foreign body.

Question: I have four dogs, and they all seem to be throwing up liquid that has a tint of red. What should I do?

Answer: I cannot tell what your dogs are vomiting, or even if it is blood, based on your description. It sounds more like they got into some red candy or something that is causing garbage gut.

If the dogs are all acting normal, and are not sick, you can hold them off of food for one day and see if the vomiting/regurgitating stops. Introduce a bland food the following day.

Question: I just adopted an eleven-month-old puppy from a shelter. He was doing just fine, but he would vomit every time we would get in the car, so I stopped taking him in the car with me and would leave him at home. This morning he vomited five times. Is it the stress of being in a new home and eating new food? Or do you think it might be something else entirely? I know he hasn't ingested anything other than dog food, and it's almost always been dog food that comes back up. What should I do?

Answer: Contact the shelter and find out if the dog was doing this before he was even adopted. I cannot tell you for sure without an exam, but there is a possibility that this dog has an anatomic problem, like megaesophagus, which was already going on before you brought him home.

If he was not vomiting before you got him, take him in for an exam by your regular vet. They might need to do a barium swallow and an X-ray of his esophagus and stomach.

Question: My six-month-old pup is vomiting a yellow foam like substance and has vomited water as well but her stool is hard. What should I do?

Answer: If your dog is vaccinated and large enough to be without food for one day, fast her as described in the article. If the vomiting stops start her on a mild diet the next day.

Question: My puppy got his 1st deworming and won't stop vomiting. He has been vomiting for two days now, won't eat but he is drinking water. What should do?

Answer: A puppy that has been vomiting for two days may be severely dehydrated and if so will die soon. This little dog needs immediate medical attention. Call your vet or emergency vet if you have one available.

Question: My dog ate trash from the bathroom and now she’s vomiting, has diarrhea and is not eating. What should I do?

Answer: "Garbage gut" usually resolves in a day or so if the dog is fasted. If your dog has no other serious health problems it is okay to hold off her food for one day and then introduce it gradually.

See the suggestions for a bland meal you can give after the fast in this article.

Question: My puppy throws up every time she drinks water and will not eat. She is also shaking. What should I do?

Answer: If she is still a puppy do not waste any time--take her for an exam by your local vet as soon as you can.

Question: My puppy was playing chase and became extremely excited, and bonked her head on a hard surface. 30 minutes later, she started vomiting partially digested food. What is wrong?

Answer: Your puppy may have a mild concussion or she may have serious brain damage. There is no way I can tell without an exam.

I suggest you take her to the vet and have her examined right away.

Question: My dog had been vomiting. I took her to the vet, and she was given an injection. She has not vomited any more. She has had water and a little food, but is sleepy and not interested in walks. Is this normal?

Answer: If your dog is still sick, even after being seen, she might need to examined again. Call the vet that gave the injection.

Question: My 4-month-old beagle puppy is throwing up yellow fluid; however, she is eating and drinking normally. She also looks bloated. What could be the cause?

Answer: Any of the reasons I listed in the article are possible. With a 4-month-old puppy, the biggest possibility is infection (are her vaccines current?), parasites (have you had her checked and dewormed if needed?), or garbage gut (eating something unusual).

As long as your puppy is acting normal, you can fast her for a day and start her on a bland food tomorrow.

Question: My 2 year old puggle threw up this morning at 5- lots of dog food and a couple small pieces of strawberry. Then she puked again at 11:45 pm just yellow liquid. She’s fine one moment wanting to play and run around then she’ll be off and not seem like her normal self but she still wants to eat. Any ideas?

Answer: It may just be an upset stomach from eating the strawberries or something else that was with them. As long as she is acting okay and is not sick, just stop feeding her. If she is depressed or still vomiting you will need to see your emergency vet, but if she is okay start her on a bland food tomorrow and see your vet on Monday if the vomiting starts up again.

Question: My 4 month old beagle lab had parvo about a month ago. I was told she was Parvo free now. In the past 2 days, she has been throwing up clear liquid and has been very gassy. Should I be concerned?

Answer: It is extremely unlikely that your dog has been exposed to a strain of the parvo virus to which she has no immunity, so I would not be concerned about that. I would be concerned if she is throwing up so much that she is becoming dehydrated, she is vomiting and also has behavioral changes (like depression), or if she has diarrhea (you already mention gassy).

It sounds like garbage gut gastritis, but there is no way to diagnose this without an exam and sometimes blood work and xrays. A four month old puppy is old enough to hold off of food for a day. If the vomiting continues even when she is not eating, or if she starts vomiting again as soon as you put her back on the food, she will need to see your regular vet.

Question: My dog doesn't want to eat. She throws up like two times a day, but won't pass stool. She will play for a bit then sleep and play again and bark at the other pups. She had her injections for parvovirus, and the other deadly virus. What is wrong with her?

Answer: I do not know how old your dog is, what kind of food he or she eats, or even where and for how long the vomiting has been going on. You can try the recommendations in the article. If your dog is still vomiting, I recommend you get him to your regular vet.

Question: My Shih Tzu was hit by a falling bottle of ketchup. After 3 minutes he vomits. Then after another 5 minutes, he vomits again. What should I do?

Answer: Did the bottle hit your dog on the head? If that is the case, the vomiting may be due to a cerebral hemorrhage. If your dog is an adult and in good shape, you can try letting him go without food for a day and see if he is still vomiting, but if this were my dog, I would take him in for an exam and possibly x-rays as soon as possible.

Question: My dog vomited once this morning it's yellow and white foam. He's laying on the couch and won't eat, but drank some water. He's moving around fine, but just looks tired. Should I be worried?

Answer: If your dog has an upset stomach do not feed him. As long as your dog stays alert and has no swelling in the stomach it is fine to fast him for the rest of the day and introduce food gradually tomorrow, as described in the article.

Question: My dog has vomited two times, and he is not eating anything, just drinking water. He is also weak. What can I do?

Answer: If your dog is weak, that indicates something serious is going on. You need to take him to your regular vet for a physical exam.

Question: Our dog is 4 (large breed bull Arab). She vomited this morning before we even gave her breakfast, and it was a large amount. We then gave her biscuits about an hour later, but she wouldn't touch them. Eventually, an hour or so later, she ate them. She hasn't vomited since, but she won't touch her dinner. She will only have small amounts of water. She doesn't seem lethargic nor unhappy. Would it be best to just monitor her?

Answer: If your dog has an upset stomach, please do not give her tasty things to encourage her to eat and get sick even more. Just let her fast. (It is the same thing if you have an upset stomach. You do not try to force yourself to eat if your stomach hurts.)

A large dog that is not lethargic should just be fasted. Hopefully, everything will be okay tomorrow or the next day, but if not you should have her looked at by your regular vet.

Question: My dog is not eating dog food but does eat pieces of chicken, other meat, and some treats. This started yesterday. She has vomited but still does not want to eat. Otherwise, she sleeps a lot but does go out to play for a little while. New food was given but she was not interested. What could the problem be and do you think it might need medical attention?

Answer: If your dog has vomited she has an upset stomach. Why are you forcing her to eat? If she is a normal healthy dog give her a 24 hour fast. If she continues to vomit during that time, or she vomits again as soon as you start her back on the mild diet recommended in the article, she will need to see her regular veterinarian.

Question: My puppy keeps on throwing up yellow foam. She won't eat or drink anything. She is also weak and shivering. What can be the cause?

Answer: Your dog might have a simple case of gastritis, or a serious infection. She might have parasites or a parvo infection. If you are concerned about this puppy see your regular veterinarian immediately.

Question: What do I do if my dog vomits more than three times?

Answer: If your dog is vomiting continuously, there may be a more serious problem that requires medical care. If he just vomited three times in a row and then stopped, follow the instructions in my article (fasting, bland food later on, etc.).

Question: My dog vomited a foamy white substance. Why did he vomit?

Answer: Your dog may have something caught in his throat, may have an irritated esophagus, or may have trouble with the acids in his stomach. There is no way of telling without an exam and bloodwork, as this is not enough information.

If your dog is vomiting like this, frequently he should be examined by your vet.

Question: My 6½ month old puppy has been sick all over my bed. It's thick, brown and chunky, but some of his vomit is light brown and liquidy. He's been farting really bad, a lot too. We don't feed him scraps or our food and he's been his normal hyper self. He doesn't drink enough normally and he eats grass and plants out the garden. Is there anything I could do to help my puppy stop vomiting?

Answer: You should monitor your puppy. If he is still sick in the morning, take him in for an exam. Even if he is not, take a stool sample to your vet to have him checked for internal parasites and giardia. Giardia is a type of protozoal infection that will cause symptoms similar to those you are describing.

Question: My dog has been throwing up every 2-3 hours all day. Seems alert and normal otherwise. She yelps a lot, right before throwing up, which is unusual. She desperately wants food and water, but we haven’t given her any. How long can she throw up like this and go without water? When do I worry and rush her in?

Answer: If she is still vomiting that often the next day, she needs to be seen by your regular vet. It is not the lack of water that will affect her; it is her acid-base balance since she is losing so many fluids through vomiting.

Question: My dog is eight-years-old, and he threw up a small bit last night. The whole day he's just been panting and constantly licking his lips; he has also started to drool. What should I do?

Answer: If your dog only vomited one time and otherwise seems okay it is okay to fast him and see how he does when you start him back on a mild diet. It is unclear from your question how bad he is panting (he may be in pain), and I cannot tell you why he is drooling. An object in the mouth, nausea, poisoning, and dental disease are all possibilities. If this were my dog, I would have him examined as soon as possible.

Question: My year-old dog stopped eating about two or three days ago, and just today, she started vomiting and has been vomiting the whole day. My mother gave her some medication, but she continued to throw up yellow slimy liquid. We tried to force her to eat a bit, but she threw up some of it later. We then gave her another medication that is supposed to help with the vomiting. She has also been kind of sleepy lately, but she still plays. Is there anything else I should do?

Answer: If your dog is vomiting, it is NOT a good idea to force feed her. If you are sick to your stomach, does your mom make you eat a plate of food? The best thing that I can recommend is that you follow the directions in the article and allow your dog to fast for a day. Do not force medication and food into her.

Question: My dog is only a year old. He hasn't eaten for the last three days. He is also weak. What can I do?

Answer: A healthy dog can go for three days without eating. If your dog is weak, though, that indicates he is sick. You need to get him to your vet for an exam and find out why he is sick.

Question: I have a 10-week old puppy that threw up six times tonight. Twice it was food then just film; he eats sticks, bark, leaves, etc. He has had his first 5 in 1 shot, and his poop was tested for bacteria, and everything checked out. What else can I do?

Answer: If your puppy is prone to eat a lot of foreign objects (the sticks, leaves, etc) he probably will have bouts of "garbage gut" from time to time. There is not a lot to worry about.

If your puppy is not a tiny or teacup size, it is okay to just let his stomach rest after he vomits once. Let him miss a meal. He is really too young to put through a full 24 hour fast but you should not need to. One missed meal should be enough for his stomach to calm down.

If the vomiting continues, he will need some medication to stop the vomiting. An injection is more effective than the oral meds so you will need to see your vet.

Question: My dog is only about two months old and vomits frequently. I care a lot about him, but I don't know what I can do. Do you have any advice?

Answer: An 8-week-old puppy that is frequently vomiting needs medical care. You should have him tested for parvo, especially if his mother was not vaccinated for parvo. You should also have his stool checked for worms. Get him to a vet as quickly as you can.

Question: My dog had vomited at least eight times in seven hours. What should I do?

Answer: You can try to fast your dog and see if it stops, but since it is so frequent if the dog is displaying any behavioral changes (acting weak, for example) or if he is small, you should contact your vet as soon as possible.

Question: My 9-year-old dog is licking carpets and continuously vomiting. What should I do?

Answer: My first suspicion would be a carpet cleaner or other product that was used and not completely removed. The dog likes the smell, licks it, gets sick, feels better later, starts licking again, etc. Try to break the cycle by cleaning the carpet with just water.

It is also possible that he is licking the carpet because he is sick to his stomach. Is he eating grass too? If your dog seems sick in any way, he should be examined by your regular vet and may need treatment.

Question: My two-year-old dog threw up for the past 12 hours, and refuses to take water or food. He continues to puke all the time, and nothing is coming out now. What can I do to help him? (He's all up to date on his shots and boosters).

Answer: If your dog refuses to take water and food that is because he feels sick to his stomach. If you have nausea, do you feel like eating?

If he is otherwise okay (alert, for example) you can hold off feeding him and see if he stops vomiting. If he still vomits frequently despite fasting, the best thing you can do is take him to your local vet. The vet will examine him and give him a shot to stop the vomiting if needed.

Question: My dog is vomiting and not eating. I am worried. Do you think she will die?

Answer: You do not indicate how long your dog has been vomiting, how long your dog has been fasting, if your dog is still drinking, nor if there are any other clinical symptoms. Based on what you have asked, I cannot give you a response.

If you are worried about your dog take her to your regular vet for an examination. If she is dehydrated then she can be put on fluids or medications until the vomiting is under control.

Question: My dog had his 5-in-1 vaccine in October, and four days later, he vomits. I thought it is because he only has an upset stomach, but this is the second day he is vomiting. Is this parvo?

Answer: If your dog is vomiting after an injection you need to take him back to the vet who vaccinated him.

I cannot tell you if the dog has parvo or another problem without testing. The puppy may just be having a vaccine reaction but if this is the case he will need to be treated. Take him back to the vet immediately.

Question: My 3 year old, 9 pound Yorkie started vomiting bile around 4am, she has vomited this 5 times this morning. She does not want food or water and is just laying near me. Her stomach feels bloated. Last night while in bed I did hear her stomach or intestines making a lot of gurgling sounds. Should I wait till tomorrow to take to vets? It’s now 4pm.

Answer: A 9 pound dog with a swollen stomach and vomiting can go downhill quickly. Take her to your emergency vet.

Question: I’m going through a divorce, and my dog and I moved out. Up until this morning, he was acting entirely like himself. I woke up to find multiple piles of diarrhea and vomit. I did mix canned food in with his dry food yesterday to entice him to eat at the new place. For the record, he’s an 11-year-old Silky Terrier. He has lost about 1/2 lb in the last two weeks. When should we go to the vet?

Answer: A small dog like a Silky that is losing weight needs to be seen right away. Call and make an appointment now.

Question: My puppy is four-months-old, and he threw up four times today within an hour. The first two times it was chunky, and the second two times it was clear and yellow liquid. It’s been about 2 hours since the last time he threw up, and now he is sleeping. I took his food away and put some ice cubes in his water bowl, so he doesn’t drink too much too fast. Now he is sleeping. What should I do?

Answer: If the puppy is four months old, and is sleeping and has stopped vomiting, it is fine to wait until tomorrow afternoon before introducing food again. Make sure it is something mild, as described in the article.

If he starts vomiting at night or in the morning, despite being off food, you should take him to a vet for a medication to stop the vomiting.

Question: My dog has thrown up four times today after eating. I’m going to try to fast her. Should I give her water during this?

Answer: Ice cubes are a much safer alternative. Your dog can still take in fluids, and will not become dehydrated, but will also not gulp down her water so fast that it makes her vomit again.

Question: My dog has not eaten for three days. Yesterday she ate, and vomited two times. She's just drinking dextrose powder, and she's so not energetic today. What should I do?

Answer: A dog can go longer without food, but if she is lethargic, that indicates a medical problem. You should take her in to your regular vet for an exam as she may need the fluids under the skin or IV, not just orally.

Question: My dog is vomiting water and not eating. What should I do?

Answer: Follow the advice given here. If your dog is old or sick, take him to the vet immediately. If he is younger and healthy, it is fine to see if he will stop vomiting after a fast.

Question: My five-month-old dog started throwing up chunky yellow vomit last night. Now he has thrown up twice, seemingly with two hours in between. The second and third times he vomited, there was considerably less quantity than the first. He is slightly lethargic and won’t eat much at all except for a small drink of water. Should we take him to the vet or monitor him?

Answer: If he is vomiting, you do not want to feed him.

I am not sure how lethargic he is, but if he is still alert and a full-sized dog, then it is fine to let him fast and see if the vomiting stops. If it does not stop, you need to take him to the vet.

Question: My nine-month-old lab ate a bunch of peanuts and then drank a lot of water. He’s thrown up about nine times now. He is acting normal, and is experiencing normal bowel movements. I’ve taken all water and food away for twenty-four hours. Is there more I should be doing?

Answer: No, it is most likely just garbage gut and irritation from the peanuts. He should be fine in less than a day.

Question: My fourteen-year-old dog vomited last night and this morning, and since she was adopted her last year, I do not know history. She is not eating and is acting lethargic. What should I do?

Answer: A senior dog can have several problems, so she needs to be seen and have her blood tested as soon as possible. Has she been spayed? It could be Pyometra. It could be cancer. She might have a kidney disease. Take her in for an exam as soon as possible.

Question: My puppy has been vomiting for three days without eating food. What should I do?

Answer: Take your puppy to your regular veterinarian immediately.

Question: My female Rottweiler has been vomiting for three days. I took her to the vet today, and he gave her vaccines. She is still vomiting. What can I do now?

Answer: Vaccines should never be given to a sick dog. If she was given a medication for the vomiting, you should take her back in and find out why things are not working. She may have a problem like an obstruction, and so injected medications are not going to help.

Question: Please help me, my six-month-old Maltipoo has been vomiting and is weak. She refuses to eat, and whenever she drinks water, she vomits. The vet doesn’t work where I am, and I am scared she might not make it through the night. Is there anything I can do to help her?

Answer: I cannot tell you why your puppy is sick. Maltipoos can become dehydrated quickly, but if you do not have an emergency clinic nearby, the best you can do for her is provide plenty of Pedialyte or coconut water to replace her lost minerals. Do you know how to give water in a syringe? If you do, great, she should be getting extra fluids in that way, but if you do not, please do not try it because you might end up drowning her.

Sometimes tiny dogs will also become hypoglycemic. There is a product you can get from your vet that you put on your fingertip for the dog to lick off; it is called Nutrical. If you cannot get this at this time, the alternative is to just let your puppy lick a little bit of Karo syrup off of your finger.

Question: My tiny Pomeranian vomited once and when I gave her water, she vomitied again. What should I do?

Answer: If your dog were an average size, you could try to hold her off food for one day and see how she does. It sounds like she was just excited. Since you mentioned she was tiny, however, you need to be more concerned. Your dog can become dehydrated and hypoglycemic more quickly than a larger dog. The safest thing to do would be to take her to your vet for an exam. If you cannot do so try to keep her calm and give her water slowly, as in ice cubes that she has to lick to drink.

Question: One of my puppies started throwing up white foamy vomit and died now the other puppy is starting; what should I do?

Answer: I have no idea of the age and vaccination status of the mother or the puppies. You could be dealing with an acute viral infection or a poisoning. You need to take the puppies to an emergenccy care vet for immediate medical care.

Ellis, your tiny puppy has just lost her family and being locked up in a crate alone all night is very stressful. I would not be surprised if the vomiting is from that. By "jab" do you mean vaccination? If it was done by a vet that person should look at your puppy since it is still possibly a vaccine reaction.

Hi! Our 8 week old puppy has been eating and drinking fine. Her stools are nice and soft but not too soft, however for the past 2 nights she has been sick in her crate. The sick is not runny or bile and seems to be regurgitated food. She had her jab yesterday so thought it could be that but didn’t think it would affect a 2nd night.

She cries for about half an hour in her crate when we leave her at night (it’s only her 4th day with us) and presumably is sick in this time. Could it be that she’s working herself up? Thanks!

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 18, 2020:

Carlo, it does not sound like it. Since he is so young watch his hydration closely. If you have any concerns take him back.

She threw up maybe 10 or 11 times, and at one point the throw up was black. We took her to the vet on the 16th but she was super aggressive and didn’t want anything to do with them so they gave us some medicine and we went on our way. They told us to fast her and occasionally we’d give her a little water but she just won’t drink much of it. Now I don’t know what to do because she won’t let the Vet check her out and she’s not acting like herself. Mainly she’s hyper and up and about but yesterday and today she’s been very mellow and quiet. What can I do to help I’m scared I might lose my dog.

My mom's 10 year old dog has been having problems. In the last 3 months she has lost the 2 members of her pack (dad) (brother). Ever since then all she does is lay around doesn't want to play or anyting. She also does not want to eat she just turns her head away or walks away. She hasn't ate in about two or two and a half weeks. When she has ate it's only been a few bites of food and she throws up everything we give her. Even with her not eating and having no food in her system she still throws up a few times a week. We have taken you into the day he's had X-rays and blood work. The only ones that vet said was wrong is her hear is like 1&1/2 size bigger then what it should be. But they do not know anything else that could be wrong with being trained different medications to get her to stop throwing up in to eat but it has not worked. If you could please message me with any ideas of what could be wrong with her and what we could do to help him. Thank you

My mom's dog is not acting the same. In the last 3 months she lost two of her pack dogs (father dog) (Brother dog) that were with her for 10 year's. Now it's just her ever since then she has not been the same at all. She Will not eat but continues to puke up a few times a day. she also just lays around does not want to get up and do anything. It seems like she is depressed and lost. We have taken her to the vets a few times. They done X-rays and blood work but nothing has came back that she's got any problems. It been like 2-3 week and she hasn't ate she just walks away or just lays there. The few times we was able to get her to eat she throws it all back up. Even with nothing in her stomach she throws up. The only thing that we do know is wrong is that her heart is one size bigger than what it should be.so just trying to see if anyone else has experienced this or possibly nose what can possibly help get her back to her normal self

Hi, my Dalmatian has been sick the last few days. My vet has been aware. He has already been given an anti sickness injection which helped however 2 days after he has thrown up after his meal. It was all chunky (not digested food) also had his breakfast meal on it too. He then ate it all before I had chance to get it up. He seems himself and is also drinking - this has been the case every time he has been sick the last few days. No bile. No yellow. Just sick containing food. Should I starve him for 24 hours and use just ice cubes for water? Then contact vet again if sick after next meal? Feel like I’m getting no where. He has had his belly felt and vet is happy there is nothing to worry about because he is going to toilet normally, has an appetite and wants to play. Any advice is appreciated

Aditi--not eating as much as normal, or not eating at all? If the puppy is only 45 days old it is going to die if it is not eating. Try lunchmeat, warm rice, warm beef stew, etc. (Not HOT!) Hand feed in very small amounts to decrease the likelihood of overeating.

If she is a tiny or very small dog, take her to the vet right away. If she is larger you can wait the full time, as described in the artice. I cannot tell if she is okay without an exam.

My dog is 5 months old and now vomited 3 times this morning she was eating and drinking fine before she vomited. And now she is only laying down and not really active as she usually is. She wasn't eating but she was drinking a lot of water. Is she okay?

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on January 23, 2020:

Betty, take your puppies to your regular veterinarian for an examination. They may have a virus and could die without treatment.

Betty on January 21, 2020:

Hi my puppies it is not eating he doesn't even want water he is vomiting green stuff and she is very weak. What can I do to help

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on January 19, 2020:

Hi Darlene, I am glad to hear you are taking her for an exam. No, no special recommendations tonight but I would not offer her a regular meal. You can give a little boiled hamburger (a tablespoon at a time, not more than a few) and see if she holds it down.

My 11 year old shitzu female intact has been vomiting for a few days drinking and vomiting she doesn’t want to eat but when she does she throws up I’m wondering if there is something I can do for her before I take her to the vet tomorrow

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on January 19, 2020:

Shiela, please read the article concerning fasting when a dog has an upset stomach. If you are nauseous, do you go to the kitchen and eat a lot of food? That makes you vomit a lot more.

Shiela on January 17, 2020:

Hi my dog has been vomiting for 6x today. But he eats alot and drinks water more often. What do you think it is? I hope he just have an upset stomach

Our dog Rhodesian Ridgebag is 7 months old . It's been 3 days ...he is continuously vomiting and has diarrhoea. Now he is also shivering. We've been to VET ...but of no use. He's taking the injections. But he won't eat or even drink water.

My 10 month old beagle mix has been throwing up since yesterday morning (over 24 hours now). The vomit is just clear or white foam now with a little rice in it. she is still drinking water and I gave her some rice last night. She’s still playful, maybe a bit more sleepy than normal. My vet is closed until tomorrow because of the holiday. Do I need to take her to the emergency vet?

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on December 31, 2019:

Kathy, I cannot tell you based on that info and without an exam. Yorkies are tiny and can go downhill very fast. See you local veterinarian as soon as possible.

My 13yr old Yorkie keeps trying to throw up but can't what's wrong.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on December 30, 2019:

Angelo--a 9 yr old Pitbull can go one day without eating. Follow the instructions in the article about fasting/returning to food. If she is still vomiting she will need to be seen by your regular vet.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on December 30, 2019:

MonicaDawn2019--no, it is not because she is just bred.If she is otherwise healthy try fasting, and then follow the instructions in the article.

Savannah, anytime a dog is vaccinated and has any unusual reaction, you should call the vet that vaccinated the pup and have her examined. She was probably just carsick and upset but if she is running a fever or has any other abnormal symptoms she needs to be treated.

Savannah on December 28, 2019:

My 3 1/2 month old just had her second round of shots and her rabies shot yesterday around 2. We got home and she was extremely hungry. I fed her and now about 11 hours later she has thrown up twice. Should I be worried? It mainly looks like food and no foam or liquid. I’m thinking she over ate but vomiting it one of the symptoms. Can anyone give me advise on what to do?

My dog is a nine year old pit bull mix. She vomited this morning right after she ate. She threw up everything she ate. After she ate she drank some water and threw that up also. She acted normal all day, so we fed her some rice cooked in chicken broth and she threw that up as well. She still seems like herself. She’s energetic and doesn’t seem to be in any pain

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on December 16, 2019:

Aspen, yes, that is possible, but since this has been going on awhile you should take him back to the vet who vaccinated and explain what is going on.

Aspen on December 13, 2019:

My 3 year old chihuahua/cairn terrier mix vomited quite a bit last night- it was first the food he mowed through and then vile. I thought maybe he just ate too fast and got sick- he’s done this before. He vomited probably 5 times? Then he was good all night and all day while I was at work and I came home and he’s acting sick again (shaking and vomited bile once). I recently learned that there is heavy machinery and construction going on at my apartment while I’m at work. He had a bowel movement last night and this morning and both looked normal. He two weeks ago had updated vaccines for Progard 5 and bordatella. Could his vomiting be because he’s just anxious about all the loud noises coming from the construction?
