Regurgitating water soon after drinking may mean a problem with the oesophagus (food pipe). Vomiting water after drinking and not eating usually indicates a problem with the stomach or intestines. What causes a dog to throw up?Dogs can throw up for many reasons. If your dog drinks lots of water, especially very cold water or after exercise, this can fill the stomach too quickly and cause them to throw some of it back up straight away. If your dog does this a lot, you can slow down your dog drinking by placing a large, clean stone in their water bowl, so they have to lap around it, or give them a small amount to drink at a time. Your dog may also drink a lot of water if they are feeling unwell (nauseous) to try to make themselves sick. This is also why dogs sometimes eat grass. It can be a dog’s way to clear out toxins, if they have eaten something that is causing a stomach upset. There are lots of more serious reasons why dogs vomit, including infections, toxins, blockages, metabolic disease (such as liver or kidney failure) and even cancer. If you have a large breed dog, such as a Doberman or Great Dan, who's throwing up after drinking water this could mean a twisted stomach and is an emergency. When should you be concerned about your dog throwing up?If a dog throws up all the water that they drink, they will quickly become dehydrated. If they are not able to keep water down, they may need treatment to stop them from vomiting and sometimes fluids by a drip to rehydrate them. If your dog is not eating, losing weight, is dull and lethargic, or has abdominal (tummy) pain or bloating, this can indicate a more serious problem and you should contact a vet immediately. Can tap water make my dog sick?Water from unclean sources can contain bacteria and other infectious organisms that can make dogs (and people) sick. It’s important to give your dog clean, fresh, potable water, which is suitable for humans to drink too. Water that is not meant for humans to drink, or that is from muddy puddles, can cause illness. Stagnant water is particularly hazardous to your dog’s health and you should discourage them from swimming in or drinking from stagnant pools. What can dogs drink other than water?Dogs can drink special rehydration fluids, which can help them to get better after vomiting or diarrhoea. Some dogs are lactose intolerant, so dairy products are not recommended. Giving dogs flavoured water, such as chicken stock, can encourage them to drink, but these can contain high salt levels and so must be used with caution. Dr. Mark is a veterinarian. My Dog Is Vomiting!If your dog only vomits once and then stops, don't worry. Sometimes he or she may have eaten too fast, or perhaps they might have an upset tummy after eating something strange while "dumpster-diving" or otherwise rooting around in weird foods. If your dog vomits several times, however, and looks like they might continue to do so, you need to take action. Here are some steps to follow. 1. Fast Your DogTake away your dog's food so that their stomach can rest. Though there is some controversy about this, a healthy dog can easily go without food for 24 hours. Be Careful About Your Dog Drinking WaterMake sure your dog is not drinking and filling up on water; if they are drinking, they are not fasting. Be sure to close the bathroom door and put the seat down!
3. After the Vomiting Stops, Let the Dog Have Some Bland Food and Small Amounts of WaterIf vomiting stops after a simple fast, they can once again be given water. You can do this by giving the dog ice cubes to lick, and then small amounts of water if the dog holds them down with no problems. You can also offer bland food — white rice with boiled hamburger or chicken breast is a good diet to use when it is time to resume feeding. A 75% rice to 25% low-fat meat (boiled low-fat hamburger) is a good ratio to follow. If they are holding everything down, you should feed the dog small meals four or five times a day for a few days, and then switch back to regular food slowly.
4. If the Dog Continues to Vomit, Take Them to Be Seen by a VetIf your dog continues to vomit even on an empty stomach, is experiencing other symptoms like lethargy, or starts vomiting again as soon as you begin feeding them, you need to take them to your vet for a physical exam and lab work. Do this as soon as possible since some problems, like bloat, need to be taken care of as soon as possible. If it is not treated, the dog will die. Take some of the dog's vomit (in a small plastic bag) with you if possible and be sure to tell the vet if you have seen any blood or black color in the vomit. Question: My 2 year old puggle threw up this morning at 5- lots of dog food and a couple small pieces of strawberry. Then she puked again at 11:45 pm just yellow liquid. Answer: It may just be an upset stomach from eating the strawberries or something else that was with them. As long as she is acting okay and is not sick, just stop feeding her. Should I be concerned? Answer: It is extremely unlikely that your dog has been exposed to a strain of the parvo virus to which she has no immunity, so I would not be concerned about that. I would be concerned if she is throwing up so much that she is becoming dehydrated, she is vomiting and also has behavioral changes (like depression), or if she has diarrhea (you already mention gassy). It sounds like garbage gut gastritis, but there is no way to diagnose this without an exam and sometimes blood work and xrays. A four month old puppy is old enough to hold off of food for a day. If the vomiting continues even when she is not eating, or if she starts vomiting again as soon as you put her back on the food, she will need to see your regular vet. Question: My dog doesn't want to eat. She throws up like two times a day, but won't pass stool. She will play for a bit then sleep and play again and bark at the other pups. He is really too young to put through a full 24 hour fast but you should not need to. One missed meal should be enough for his stomach to calm down. If the vomiting continues, he will need some medication to stop the vomiting. An injection is more effective than the oral meds so you will need to see your vet. Answer: An 8-week-old puppy that is frequently vomiting needs medical care. You should have him tested for parvo, especially if his mother was not vaccinated for parvo. If he still vomits frequently despite fasting, the best thing you can do is take him to your local vet. The vet will examine him and give him a shot to stop the vomiting if needed. She was probably just carsick and upset but if she is running a fever or has any other abnormal symptoms she needs to be treated. After she ate she drank some water and threw that up also. She acted normal all day, so we fed her some rice cooked in chicken broth and she threw that up as well. She still seems like herself. I thought maybe he just ate too fast and got sick- he’s done this before. He vomited probably 5 times?
