We expected a whole lot of strange things happening at Hawkins but Max levitating? That’s something none of us expected. Ever since the Stranger Things trailer dropped, Max’s powers have become the talking point but some eagle-eyed fans have caught up on another twist that you may have missed – Billy’s gravestone says, William Hargrove.

Umm, what just happened here? Allow us to elaborate.

Why does Billy’s gravestone say William Hargrove in the Stranger Things trailer?

You thought Billy’s arc was over? No, not so much. Even though he didn’t make an appearance, his grave did twice. And it does look like it’ll play a significant role in the horrific events that are to unfold.

In the first scene, Max is at his gravestone clearly not over his death. Although he wasn’t the ideal brother, she is still grappling with the loss. In the next scene of the Stranger Things trailer, where Max is levitating, the name on the gravestone changes to Willian Hargrove. Is this an error because it doesn’t seem like one. It feels more like a twist that the Duffer brothers intended for the fans.

Maybe Billy or the Mind Flayer still has an influence over Max, especially at his grave. Alternatively, it could also mean that Upside Down is changing reality. The Duffer Brothers have mentioned to IGN that the horrors of the other side are leaking out. They further added that the sightings of the grandfather clock aren’t a good sign. Something sinister is surely happening to Max because she’s the only one to see it. We assume that the grandfather clock also serves as a portal to the other side. All this means Max is in serious trouble this season!

Will Billy come back to torment the Hawkins gang?

Well, there are reasons to believe that show creators are preparing a comeback for the character. Although he may not appear as Billy but in some other capacity to terrorize them. There’s an episode that’s dedicated to Billy and his grave shows up twice, one featuring a significant event.

The fourth season of Stranger Things has set social media alight with fan theories, but it turns out that observant viewers also pick up on potential mistakes.

Now, while there’s no denying that volume one of the series is brilliant, one of its most iconic scenes actually seems to contain a minor error.

It’s on the gravestone of Billy ‘William’ Hargrove and was pointed out by one very observant fan on TikTok.

A red circle was used to point out the error, and Netflix itself responded in the comments section with a shocked emoji.

Well, the name on the gravestone initially reads ‘Billy Hargrove’ but when the camera passes it again, it’s changed to ‘William Hargrove’.

Reacting to the observation, one fan wrote: “William is Billy’s real name.”

A second remarked: “I SAW THAT IDK WHY I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT IT.”

A third added: “Everyone is saying that Billy is short for William but that doesn’t stop that fact that the name changed.”

Meanwhile, one TikTok user suggested that there may well be a reason for the name switch.

They wrote: “What if when she read the letter she was already in trance and in that illusion Billy was written on the tombstone instead of William.”

This observation comes after yet another fan noticed why ‘Running up that Hill’ is Max’s favourite song.

It’s a theory that relates to Billy, and if we’re honest, it’s a real tear-jerker.

The fan wrote on TikTok: "Just realised why this is Max's fave song. It's how she feels about Billy."

They repeated the lyrics: "And if I only could, I'd make a deal with God / And I'd get him to swap our places."

In short, Max wishes it was her name on the headstone and not Billy’s.

Reacting to the apparent revelation, one fan wrote: “I was crying when watching this scene and when I realised this I was literally sobbing.”

A second added: “Poor Max, all that guilt she is carrying.”

Another user wrote alongside crying emoji: “Didn’t realise it until I saw this. I wasn’t paying attention to the lyrics while watching.”

A fourth remarked: “And then ‘be running up that road’ would be her running to save him instead of standing still.”

Did you pick up on any of these observations?

Volume two isn't being released by Netflix until 1 July, so we will undoubtedly see more theories circulating on before then.

We need to talk about Billy.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things premiered on Netflix back in the summer of 2016 and swiftly became a global phenomenon.

Masterfully blending horror, sci-fi, comedy, and drama, the series has only grown in popularity across three seasons now, with audiences recently being invited to check out a captivating trailer for season 4.

An unlikely fan favourite to emerge from season 3 was Dacre Montgomery’s Billy Hargrove. However, in the wake of the finale, fans weren’t expecting to see the actor reprise the iconic role moving forward.

Yet, some fan theories have begun to emerge online after audiences spotted a William Hargrove headstone in the Stranger Things 4 trailer.

William Hargrove headstone in the Stranger Things 4 trailer

Looking back on the season 3 finale, Billy had previously been possessed by the Mind Flayer and was seen doing its bidding throughout the season.

He was tasked with luring victims to a mill so that the entity could build an army.

When the central characters aim to stop the evil and flee the mall, Eleven was able to stop the Mind Flayer from manipulating Billy and, using his freedom for good, he sacrificed himself to save his family and the citizens of Hawkins.

The season 4 trailer shows his sister Max at his headstone, narrating how much life has changed since he’s been gone. However, while the stone reads Billy Hargrove in this scene, there is a later shot that shows Max levitating above a gravestone that reads “William Hargrove.”

A mistake? Surely not. While some may dismiss the shot as part of a dream sequence, other theories are arguably more plausible. For example, Den of Geek speculates that the William headstone could signal a parallel universe, which would explain why Max has powers.

The Upside Down has already proven that an alternate Hawkins exists, but maybe it’s not the only one.

‘Maybe both versions of him have a grave?’

A number of other theories have emerged too. For example, one fan suggests on Twitter that there are two versions of Billy, citing that he saw himself during the car crash scene in season 3.

A more sinister theory about Billy points to the mysterious antagonist – Vecna – in the season 4 trailer actually being Billy.
