Every day, phone calls play a critical role in your business, so it can be unnerving to hear the message “Person is not accepting calls” when you try to reach someone about an important matter. The cause might be either in your own iPhone or on the phone of the person you are calling. Their phone may have been stolen, or their service may have been disconnected. In some instances, a fix is easy and within your grasp. Other times, a solution might be out of your hands.
For many smartphones, calls go to voicemail automatically if the number is busy or if the phone is not taking calls, such as when a "Do Not Disturb" mode is active. However, if the account does not have voicemail set up, some cellular service providers play a generic “Person is not accepting calls” message. In this case, your best bet is to try the number later.
If the person you are trying to call discovered their iPhone was lost or stolen and reported that fact to their service provider, the carrier likely disconnected the service to the phone. When you subsequently try calling that number, you may get a message that the phone is not accepting calls. When you suspect the service may have been disconnected, try to make contact through a mutual friend or colleague.
Unpaid cellular service bills eventually lead to a suspended or disconnected number. This may have happened to the person you are trying to contact. They may still be able to receive internet-based text messages, though, if they have access to Wi-Fi on the iPhone, so try communicating with a text.
The person you are trying to reach may have blocked your number, so you receive the “Person is not accepting calls” message. On most accounts, you can not talk to the person directly, but you can leave a voicemail. If that does not work, try calling another person you both know.
It is possible you set your iPhone to block the number you are trying to reach inadvertently or forgot you blocked it. When you call a number you blocked on your phone, you may hear a message that the person is not receiving calls. To unblock a number on an iPhone, follow these steps:
The person you are calling may have turned off their iPhone, or they may be outside their coverage area. Typically, incoming calls go to voicemail under these conditions, but if voicemail is not enabled, you may hear a message. Do not confuse the “Not accepting calls” message with a busy signal or “All circuits busy” message, which occur during emergencies and other times when the cellular system is overloaded. They can also occur in rural areas where cell service is limited.
