Match the character position in the medical and surgical section codes to its meaning.

Main content27-1Code StructureSeven is the lucky number when it comes to ICD-10-PCS codes. The ICD-10-PCS codes containseven characters, which can be letters or numbers. Each alphanumeric character has a specificmeaning or value depending on its place in the lineup. Each code is made up of any one of the10 digits 0–9 and any one of 24 letters A–H, J–N, and P–Z. The letters O and I are not used so asnot to be confused with the numbers 0 and 1.ICD-10-PCS defines the term procedure to mean the complete specification of the sevencharacters. Each procedure is divided into specific sections that identify the general type ofprocedure with the first character, either a number or letter, designating the section. Thesections and their corresponding section identifier (number or letter) are as follows:SectionSection IdentifierMedical and Surgical0Obstetrics1Placement2Administration3Measurement and Monitoring4Extracorporeal or Systemic Assistance 5and PerformanceExtracorporeal or Systemic Therapies6Osteopathic7Other Procedures8Chiropractic9ImagingB

ICD-10-PCS Code StructureICD-10-PCS codes have a logical, consistent structure that contains seven (7) alphanumericpositions, calledcharacters. An ICD-10-PCS code is best understood as the result of a processin which codersbuild a code. The process consists of assigningvaluesto each character, basedon specific characteristics of the procedure the physician performs. The ICD-10-PCS manualuses Tables, which are reference grids used to select the body part, operative approach, and othercharacteristics of the procedure.ICD-10-PCS codes consist of seven positions orcharacters, each with a designated purpose, which creates consistency across codes. Coders select individual letters and number, calledvalues, in a standard order to occupy the seven characters of the code. Each characterrepresents a specific aspect of the procedure and can have up to 34 different values, consisting ofthe ten digits (0 - 9) and 24 letters (A - H, J - N, and P - Z). Not every character uses all 34values. For some sections and some characters, only a few values are used while in others, mostof the values are used. Each Section of the manual designates how each character of the code isused within that Section. The definition of each value, for example1orA, is based on thecharacter it occupies. Examples will be provided.NOTE:ICD-10-PCS values do not use the letters I and O to avoid confusion with the numbers 1and 0. This is different from ICD-10-CM, which does use both the letters I and O and thenumber 1 and 0The options and values for a character vary based on the first character of the code, whichidentifies the Section. The largest Section is Medical and Surgical.Characters in the Medicaland Surgical Section are defined as follows:Character 1 defines theSection, or broad procedure category where the code is found.Character 2 defines theBody Systemin which the procedure is performed.Character 3 defines theRoot Operation, or the objective of the procedure.
