  • There are no problems with the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), check other codes.

Check the "Possible Causes" listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins.

  • Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Warning Light ON
  • Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) receives serial data messages from the Body Control Module (BCM), Engine Control Module (ECM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) which are needed to perform Antilock Brake System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES), or Traction Control System (TCS) functions. This DTC indicates that there are no problems in the EBCM. The BCM, ECM, IPC and the TCM should be checked for a possible fault.

How to fix code c0561-71

Code C0561 comes in two forms.

C0561-71 System disabled Information stored invalid serial data received
C0561-72 System disabled Information stored alive counter incorrect.

C codes are considered “chassis” code. This particular code is for GM and relates to the traction control system. The traction control system gets its data from the ABS system. When it detects one wheel spinning faster than the others, or one wheel locking up, it activates the traction control system. Depending on the generation of traction control, the system will activate the ABS brakes to reduces spinning, or, in later models can actually reduce engine power. Late model systems include yaw sensors and steering position sensors to detect the difference between the driver’s intention from the steering wheel and the actually direction the vehicle is moving.

In the case of this GM code, the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is what disables the traction control system or the vehicle stability enhancement system.

The code means the EBCM is receiving faulty data from other modules or is faulty itself.

What is c0561 chevrolet code meaning?

The first thing to know about GM trouble code C0561 is that it's related to ABS and traction control, while C codes are generally known as "chassis" error codes.

Now you know what you need to fix, right?

Well, not exactly.

From my experience, before fixing the problem, you need to figure out how to find which exact part of your car is faulty.

That is why I have decided to share my experience and write this article.

Let's dive right in.

What is Causing Code C0561

For example, Chevy, GMC, and some older GM vehicles are prone to showing this error code. For some owners of Opel C0561 code is not uncommon as well.

But other than seeing the check engine light or ABS light on the dashboard, you will not have a clue where is the problem. Is it only a fuse, a sensor, engine control module, or antilock brake system?

Chevy DTC Code Explained (GM/Opel/Buick/Cadillac/Chevrolet c0561-71)

What does code c0561 mean on the Chevy Silverado, Chevy Malibu, Chevy Traverse, Chevy Tahoe and other GMC vehicles, like Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, GMC Yukon, etc?

For example, code C0561 on the Chevrolet Silverado alerts you that there is a problem with the electronic brake control module (EBCM).

This error automatically disables the traction control system or the vehicle stability enhancement system. The code means the EBCM is receiving incorrect data from other modules or is faulty itself.

EBCM Meaning

The EBCM (short for electronic brake control module) controls the electronic braking systems. All electronic control modules use serial data message system to read all of the braking system's sensors and activates the ABS or traction control system when it detects it is necessary.

If the traction control light went off on the dashboard, you probably have an issue with the EBCM. When the central control unit for the ABS fails or has any problems, it will set off the ABS Light to alert the driver of a problem.

How to Fix Code C0561-71 Traction Control Code

DTC C0561 code comes in 3 different flavors:

  1. GM dtc c0561-71 code: System disabled information stored invalid serial data received;
  2. GM dtc c0561-72 code: System disabled information stored alive counter incorrect;
  3. GM dtc c0561-74 code: System disabled information value of signal protection calculation incorrect.

This particular code relates to the DTC traction control system on GM manufactured vehicles. The ABS system and various sensors are feeding the data straight to the body control module.

The traction control system is automatically activated when it detects the following scenarios:

  • one wheel locking up (detected by the ABS sensor);
  • or one wheel spinning faster than the others.

What are c0561 chevrolet code possible symptoms?

Depending on the traction control system version or generation, the system will reduce the engine power, or in older models, to activate the ABS brakes to reduce spinning - a so called torque reduction.

Be cautious though, as torque reduction can be caused by other malfunctions, like a faulty wheel speed sensor or EGR valve for example.

Newer systems with cruise control also include steering position sensors and yaw sensors to detect the difference between the driver’s intention based on the steering wheel position and the vehicle's actual direction.

In this GM code, the electronic brake control module (EBCM) disables the vehicle stability enhancement system or the traction control system.

The code usually means one of the following two things has happened:

  • the EBCM is defective itself;
  • or the EBCM is receiving faulty data from other modules and sensors.

Finally, how do I fix the DTC code C0561?

Even if you suspect that EBCM is defective, it is a costly item and you do want to make sure it is not being replaced for nothing:

  • make sure to get the system diagnostic procedure done with scan tool;
  • check if the traction control fuse or ABS fuses are burnt;
  • check the brake system for fluid leaks and proper fluid levels.
  • get the EBCM wiring and connectors thoroughly checked.
