For today’s Show Sunday I want to talk about an anime! I don’t think I have talked about an anime before and I don’t watch that many either. But this week I came across the new Fruits Basket anime and I’ve had the manga on my wishlist for a while. I wasn’t that sure if I wanted to read the manga, as they’re pretty expensive, so I decided to watch the anime first and decide after that. So let’s take a look at my first impression!

Why is Fruits Basket manga so expensive

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out…into a tent! Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when embraced by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac!

When I’m writing this article there are 11 episodes out and there will be 24 in this first season. I believe there are 23 volumes of the manga. They have been rereleased in 12 collectors editions with cover I like a lot better than the previous ones. But they’re pretty big and kinda expensive for how fast I read them and compared to other manga. So like I said, I was on the fence whether I wanted to buy them. I wasn’t completely sure if I would like them, as I’m so far more a fan of the high fantasy and science fiction manga.

I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode! We don’t get to see that much of the story yet and everything that’s said in the synopsis is shown in this first episode. However, the fact that they turn into the animals of the Chinese zodiac doesn’t get shown until the very last scene. This was one of my favorite scenes though!

I wasn’t expecting to be crying during this first episode! But we got to see some of the background of Tohru and that was beautifully done. I loved it a lot, and like I said, it made me super emotional. As soon as I finished the first episode I ordered the first volume of the manga! And now I’m debating whether I should wait and read that first or if I should go ahead and watch some more episodes haha.

The characters in the anime are a lot of fun and I instantly liked most of them. Tohru is such a cutie and I can’t wait to get to now her better! We’ve only met 3 of the Sohmas but they were wonderful. As I understand it, there are quite some different ships in this anime and manga and I can already see that! I’m just very excited about this story and I can’t wait for my manga to get her! All in all I would definitely recommend this one if you enjoy anime.

I have volumes 1-20 and volume 23, but I never bought 21 or 22. There's a whole story behind why, but now that I'm trying to finish my collection so I can reread them I have discovered that volume 21 can go for as much as three hundred dollars. Did they only print a thousand copies or something? Did a warehouse catch fire? I know it's a good series, but other volumes are usually around twenty bucks these days! This is crazy town.
