Hi NY D. This is an interesting question. It's a Regents review question, and it usually comes in the multiple choice section, looking like:

Which town or city is located within the New York State landscape region with the greatest difference in elevation from the highest to the lowest land levels?
(1) Buffalo (2) Rochester
(3) Old Forge (4) Massena

If we look at that list, Rochester (505 feet)and Buffalo (600 feet) are in the Erie-Ontario Lowlands. Massena (200 feet) is in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. None of these sound too promising.

Old Forge (1857 feet) is in the Adirondack Mountains. Things are looking up,quite literally. There are 46 peaks in the Adirondack chain. Mount Marcy is the highest point in the state of New York, 5344 feet (over a mile high). The shortest of the high peaks in the chain is Couchsachraga Peak, at only 3820 feet. That's a difference of 1524 feet from one top to the next. The difference in elevation from Old Forge to the top of Mount Marcy is 3487 feet.

I'd choose #3, Old Forge.
