STAAR GRADE 8 Reading May 2022 Released Answer Key

~Jaqueline Woodson (author

I love to pick up a book, a poem, or a magazine and experience the author's words. Hear what they heard. See what they saw. Feel what they felt. Understand them. I also love to write so that maybe others to share my experiences. Maybe they can understand me better.

Take some time to connect with the authors you and your students read this year. Take some time to allow your students to connect to their audience.

Take a look at the upcoming fall sessions. It's time to understand more.

STAAR reading tests contain varying amounts of authentic published texts. Copyright permission for these texts is obtained from publishers by the testing contractor on behalf of TEA. These copyright agreements may or may not include permission for a wider, non-secure release after testing. If material that was used during testing could not be included in a released test form due to specific copyright permissions, text is provided in the form that indicates where the source material originated.

3rd Grade-High School EOCs are available. 8th Grade 2022 STAAR is still pending.

The evidence is clear; an overwhelming number of peer-reviewed documents have linked strong decoding to fluent and accurate reading. Too many students fail to acquire the skills they need to become efficient and effective readers.

Participants will leave with immediate strategies to help your struggling readers practice what good readers do naturally, which is

  • pay attention to every word,
  • read with a high rate of accuracy, and
  • use strategies for attacking unfamiliar, complex, content area, and multi-syllabic words.

With STAAR 2.0 requiring all RLA Students to write Short Constructed Responses and Extended Constructed Responses, it is vital that we prepare our students for these types of assessment items.

In this workshop educators will be taken through several aspects of the constructed responses:

  • Example Prompts: We will break down the prompts into the components we need to teach.
  • Example Responses: We will analyze these for strengths, weaknesses, structure, and teaching opportunities.
  • Analyzing Composition Passages for quotes, paraphrasing, and proof of responses.

Using the Year At a Glance from the TEKS Resource System, educators will plan out upcoming instructional units.

The TEKS Resource System has created revised YAGs for the 2022-2023. In some cases, days have been adjusted and in other cases, the unit placement has been adjusted. This was all done to produce a more balanced time commitment to literary and nonfiction text study along with an enhanced opportunity for cross-genre reading and writing skill practice.

Educators will be taken through the rationale of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade YAG revisions. Also, resources and planning templates that encourage learning objectives, reading and writing connections, word study, and graphic organizers aligned to the Performance Assessments will be shared electronically.

The focus of this day will be to plan the 3rd Six Weeks units as well as the beginning of the second semester.

As a reminder, Texas Education Code (TEC,) §28.006(c-1) requires each school district to administer, at the beginning of the seventh grade, a reading instrument adopted by the commissioner to each student whose performance on the grade 6 STAAR reading assessment did not demonstrate reading proficiency.

Districts of innovation are NOT exempted from this statutory requirement. At this time, the reading instruments adopted by the commissioner include the four listed below:

  • Istation’s Indicators of Progress, Advanced Reading (ISIP-AR)
  • Reading Analysis and Prescription System (RAPS 360)
  • Texas Middle School Fluency Assessment (TMFSA)
  • Woodcock Johnson III Diagnostic Reading Battery (WJ III DRB)

Districts seeking to use an instrument for the 2022-2023 school year that is not on the current commissioner's list may request a waiver of the requirement to use a commissioner-adopted instrument, subject to application and approval. The alternate grade 7 reading instrument waiver must be submitted by December 30, 2022. Additional reading instruments are expected to be adopted in the 2022-2023 school year and the waiver is not expected to be made available beyond the 2022-2023 school year.

From TCEA comes three activities that you can read through and put to use in your classroom almost immediately! Students' ability to summarize what they've read is a marker of reading comprehension. It's time to actively teach how to summarize.

Take a look at these three activities. Whether you are already teaching summarization or are looking for a way to do it, these three new techniques might be just what you need.

TEKS Resource System can offer specificity to parents to better explain what students need to know or be able to do.

The performance assessments might help you design work or guide parents in getting students to successfully meet the expectation(s).

Use it to create essential questions paired with text.

Remember the system also offers STAAR stem questions that can be paired with a specific genre of study.
