To use Remote Desktop, your administrator and client computers must meet these requirements:

  • Mac computers must be running OS X 10.10.5 or later.

  • Mac client computers must have version 3.6 or later of the Remote Desktop client software for full control.

Although you may be able to control and observe Mac computers using earlier versions of the Remote Desktop client software, you can’t generate reports or execute remote commands.

To find the client software version, when you’re using Remote Desktop, select the computer, choose File > Get Info, and look at the ARD Version field. To find the client software version on Mac computers you haven’t yet added to the All Computers list, go to the computer, locate the following file in the Finder, and check its version:

    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app

  • Non-Mac client computers must have Virtual Network Computing (VNC)–compatible software.

When you install Remote Desktop and open it for the first time, use the setup assistant to finalize configuration. After configuration, you start administering computers by adding clients to the main list of computers.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'm a light user of RDC and it usually works OK when I need it - but FOUR updates in less than 30 days (8.0.27 on Mar. 15, 8.0.28 on Mar. 21, 8.0.29 on Mar. 31, 8.0.30 on Apr. 08), its annoying. Come on M$, get your act together!

The Mac App Store is supposed to make installing apps easier and more convenient. And while this may be true in many cases, using the App Store can be a real pain when trying to quickly install an app for someone else who probably doesn’t know their Apple ID credentials. A quick Google search of “Remote Desktop for Mac” won’t give you an official Microsoft direct download for Remote Desktop for Mac, so you might conclude the only way to get it is via the App Store. Well, not exactly…

Microsoft does have direct download links for their App Store distributed software, however they appear to be hidden for some reason or another. There’s a useful website macadmins.software which lists the direct download links for many of these apps. This includes Remote Desktop 10 for Mac, which can be downloaded using this official Microsoft link. No need to risk getting viruses from sketchy third party websites!

Is your macOS version too old to run Remote Desktop 10?

There’s no need to bother upgrading macOS when all you want to do is RDP to another computer. While the old Remote Desktop 8 (which is compatible with older macOS versions) is no longer available on the Mac App Store or direct from Microsoft, you can still download it direct from macsx 100% malware-free — just check out this article.

I am trying to download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App store to my MacBook Pro. I select download and it appears to be working for about a minute than goes back to the download screen. Searching my MAC shows nothing downloaded.

I have also tried iTunes as discussed in the is forum, but that says that the page/link does not exist.

How do I download Microsoft Remote Desktop?

Thanks in advance for all responses.
