Describe the English proverbs which reflect either independent or interdependent construal of self

1ACTIVITY 4Chapter 5 (Culture, Self, and Identity)Exercise 1: The Independent and Interdependent Selves[Objective]The Purpose Of This Exercise Is To Have Students Familiarize Themselves With TheConcept And Scale Of Independent And Interdependent Construal Of Self.Student Number: D20181081508Name: Meerusha Nair A/P N.KumarDate: 20 Nov 2020Markus and Kitayama (1991) presented two fundamentally different senses of self bycontrasting the Western or individualistic construal of self as independent self and theinterdependent construal of self that is seen more in non-Western, collectivistic cultures.Their concepts offer a prime example of how self-concept may differ across cultures andprovide a conceptual framework within which to understand the influence of culture on self.

Looking back at my e-Portfolio the information on my top artifacts page shows how I view myself and my culture. The first top artifact I chose to do was choosing a photo that represents my culture. This choice pushed me to look at my culture in America in depth and pick out major themes and other things that connect the culture. I chose ….. Another artifact I completed was an enculturation activity where I found out how similar my parents’ beliefs and values were to mine. We had many values in common that I didn’t realize we had before completing this artifact. In another module I chose was “How Long Can You Wait.” This was to see how long you would wait based on the person you were waiting for; a parent, sibling, boyfriend/girlfriend, boss, friend, etc. I saw some differences in how long I’d wait only because time is very important me. If I were to schedule plans with someone depending who they are, I wouldn’t wait as long for a friend. I would wait much more longer for my parents.

My blog post concepts consisted of answering with common sense. They were filled with personal experiences similar to the top artifacts page. They both involved writing about personal concepts about culture. In Cross-Culture Psychology we’ve discussed the self. To be more specific, Self-Esteem, which is when one makes cognitive and affective evaluations about themselves. We discussed how self-enhancement is a collection of psychological processes where one bolsters their own self-esteem. In Social Psychology self-esteem is a persons overall attitude they hold about themselves. It’s import to support and strengthen your self-esteem (self-enhancement) because self-esteem influences decision making and positive self-talk. In both it can be impacted by discrimination, devaluation, and prejudicial experiences.

I chose this image because it shows how in this blog I was able to look back on my e-Portfolio. I reflected on what I learned in this course and compared the differences between this course and another. This was followed by describing the differences between the pages on my e-Portfolio.

The place where I get my nails done all of the nail ladies/men are Asian, specifically Vietnamese. They are always nice and have smiles on their faces, but sometimes right when they look at my hands they start speaking to each other in Vietnamese. Thinking they might be saying something negative about my nails/hands, they still always express the biggest grins on their faces. Their behaviors are similar to my expectations because I know in American culture it’s rude and impolite to say something negative about someone’s appearance, in this case someone’s hands, nails, and feet. I’m assuming in their culture it’s also rude to do so. Another occasion is when I visited Jamaica, the people in that culture came off to be very blunt. They call it how they see it. Their behaviors were different from my expectations because some of the things they would say to people, I would never ay to someone’s face. To me the things they were saying were rude, but I don’t think they were meaning to be rude or knew that what they were saying was rude. The concept of universality and cultural display rules couldn’t help explain these specific experiences I had. I understand by looking at others facial expressions could help identify certain behaviors from people. In my situations the other culture did a good job keeping the same facial expressions while talking negatively/ being “rude.”

I chose this image because it shows how someone can easily hide their emotions by not expressing their true feelings. Normally, facial expressions indicate how someone is feeling or if they are in a certain mood, but it’s easy for one to simply hide their true feelings.

I believe fairytales do reflect “a shared set of cultural norms and values.” Females in most fairy tales are looked at as always needing to be saved by the prince, or some type of dominant male figure. This shows social norms that it’s “normal” to see the women getting saved or helped by a male. The impact of the main character’s role, if their role were more egalitarian, would have influence younger audiences by showing that everyone should be equal and be seen the same way. An example could be instead of having the male figure help out the women, have them figure out something together. This would show that no one person succeeded in whatever the task was. They both would show success, winning, or happiness. In “the Blind Side,” I identify with Sandra Bullock. She influences me in a positive way by how she brought that boy into her home because he didn’t have a home. She gave him food, football, and even helped him with his schoolwork. Her character was a kind soul and showed a positive influence on any audience member watching this movie.

My image is a clip from the movie that I felt was a positive influence on me. I love helping people whenever they are in need. It makes me feel like I’m making the world more a better place.

The Self-Determination Theory states, that each culture shares psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, but the ways some of these needs are expressed can be different depending on the culture and it’s context. I satisfy my needs in autonomy academically by being able to make my own choices in school and not feeling guilty or concerned with my choices after making them. I choose to be organized and study in each of my classes because I want to succeed in school. I always act on the best interests for my future. For competence, I satisfy my needs academically by having the knowledge and skills to be a good student. My attitude towards my education is what helps me succeed. Lastly, I satisfy my needs for relatedness academically by connecting with my academics. I relate with other students that want to do good in school and create a better future for ourselves.

I chose this image because I believe it relates to how each of my needs are satisfied in each topic of the Self-Determination Theory. This shows success is the key to satisfy all my needs.

Numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 10 are associated with the dimension ‘independent construal of self’ because they represent my self-reflection. Numbers 3, 5, 8, 9 are associated with the ‘interdependent construal of self’ because they show myself through who I am to others. Based on the numbers above, I identify more with the dimension ‘independent construal of self’ because I focused more on personal and internal attributes than what roles I’m adjusted to play in life. I identify less interdependent based on the numbers I had only four numbers that were under this dimension rather than six under ‘independent construal of self’. I do view myself separate and individually more than I do having to fit in with the outside world. I’d describe the independent self in English proverbs as “Be yourself always” and for interdependent self as “Be caring and concerned”. It was easier for me to think of the proverbs that reflected the “independent self”. I believe it was easier to think of one for this dimension because it’s effortless for me to describe how I view myself separate from viewing myself with others.

I chose this image because being the best me I can is very important. Always express yourself no matter what role your playing in life, whether it be a friend, a family member, a wife/husband, etc.

Being able to review my feedback from exam one let me view all of the questions I got incorrect. This then let me know that for the next exam, I should re-read each chapter to make sure I’ve covered everything. Overall the information reviewed in the book and covered in the PowerPoints reflected in the exam. When preparing for exam one, I looked over the PowerPoints alongside reading through the chapters, which I printed out so that I could make hand written notes on each chapters packet. While doing this I was able to cover mostly everything I thought I needed to know for the exam. I completed my study guide the Friday before the exam was given, which I felt like was enough time for me to study. For the next exam, I’m going to complete the study guide a week prior to the exam instead of only five days before. This should definitely prepare me more for exam two! Being able to review exam one after taking it will help with future test taking immensely. I will be able to look at what I missed and figure out the correct answer. After reviewing exam one, I also will be able to reach for a higher score on my next exam.

While taking the NEO personality test, I learned new things about my own personality that I wasn’t aware of before. On the Conscientiousness dimension I scored a 34, which ranged in an average area. I am a highly clean and organized person, but sometimes I can slack off. My personality fits in this dimension because I do set goals for myself and always complete them. Sometimes I don’t do as well as I know I could have and that’s mostly because I get lazy. I tend to procrastinate on my assignments, but I’ve been working hard on not waiting until the last minute to complete them. Being a reliable person is a top priority for me. When I work with another person on anything, for example a project, I will never let them down. Continuing on to the Openness dimension, I scored a 28, again in an average area for a female. This fits my personality because I am usually open to new things, but I am picky. I’m always open to trying new foreign foods and poetry can sometimes be an enlightenment. My personality doesn’t fit well in this dimension because I generally like to stick to one thing once I know it works. New environments can affect my mood and I’m not good at being in them, but I am capable to adjust. Next, I scored a 34 on the Agreeableness dimension, which ranged in a high area. When I meet new people, I am always nice and courteous. I respect people how I would want to be respected. I always think of others before myself, whether it be my family, friends, or even strangers. I don’t think my personality fits in this dimension because sometimes I can get an attitude. With my job as a server, some guests tend to be rude towards me, which can cause me to have an attitude towards other guests. When it comes to certain things, like me being right, I can be extremely stubborn. Moving on to the Extraversion dimension, my score ranged in a high area around 35. I do believe I fit well in this dimension because I am always energized. I love being around people most of the time. Laughing is the best feeling you can have when you’re with the people that you love. I am a huge goofball, I’m always laughing and smiling, but I don’t feel fit in this dimension because I do like my alone time. Being together with others is great, but sometimes I need to get away from everyone. I’d rather go do my own thing, then be the leader of a group. Lastly, in the Neuroticism dimension I scored an average 23. This was my lowest scoring dimension. I fit in this dimension mainly because I am an anxious person. I have a lot of worry and fear that races through my mind often. Mainly my worries are for my future, even though I know there is no need to worry. My personality doesn’t fit in this dimension because no matter how much fear or anxiety I have, I am an optimistic person and I know everything will be just fine.

This is Me

I chose this image because it lists most of the words I would use to describe myself. I believe I am strong and hardworking (words which I didn’t list in this image). I have my days when I don’t think I am the best me I could be, but I don’t let that affect how I view myself overall. It’s important to see yourself in a positive way and look at all the amazing things about you.

As of today, I consider myself to be a hard-working, motivated student. I’ve learned that when I put in effort, I am capable to succeed in whatever goal I set for myself. This can reflect negatively when I don’t put in enough effort. Discussing my levels of confidence as a student, I’d say that they’re higher now that I’ve begun taking courses that interest me. I wasn’t always as confident in school as I am today. Throughout my educational journey as a student, I’ve learned that if I want to be successful in not only school, but life, I need to believe in the ability that I can achieve my goals. Knowing that practice will improve and grow my knowledge, skills, and talents, I will be able to improve my success rate, which will result in raising my current level of confidence as a student. My self-efficacy survey results showed that my overall score was an 89.2%. My task accomplishments include growing as a student and succeeding in the future. In relation to my results, these accomplishments can be reached by focusing a little more on how I approach different goals, challenges, and tasks, knowing that it is up to me to create a successful future for myself.

Self-Efficacy Results

This image is relevant to this blog entry because I wasn’t really expecting my overall score to be lower then a 90%. My results broke down and explained to me why I got the score of an 89.2%. I never realized that I needed to work on believing in my ability to succeed. Now that I know that, my first task is to work on growing as a student by learning to believe in myself.

While reading the first few chapters and going over the course objectives, I’ve learned somewhat about the influence of culture. I find that understanding how each culture is different and having the knowledge on how to interact with them will be useful to me in the future. I love to travel to other countries, so I will be able to use my skills and knowledge about a culture’s different elements to respect and interact with each specific culture. My expectations for this course are to be able to understand as much as I can about Cross-Cultural Psychology as a whole. So far in this course, I am extremely interested in learning more about behaviors and experiences in different cultures. I hope to gain definite knowledge on the interaction of each topic covered in this course.

To ensure my success in this course, I am going to make sure I read over all of my notes and PowerPoints thoroughly. Also, I am going to stay on top of all of my assignments, making sure I read them well and complete them correctly. I believe if you want to succeed in something you have to give it your all, and that is what I plan to do. For my image I chose a meme because to me it relates to this course’s objectives. When Dorthy realizes she isn’t in Kansas anymore, she experiences culture shock. There are cultural differences she is exposed to, therefore she has to learn to understand and communicate with the “people” of this culture to interact with them successfully.
