Add SharePoint site to trusted locations in Excel

Our company has a bunch of different office templates for various customer work, and a few of them have macros. Originally I set this up by using a dfs share and Group Policy to point to the share, and set the share as a Trusted Location and everything works fine.

Now because of the amount of remote people and our recent move to Office365 I thought why not use sharepoint. So I basically copied the GPO and changed the workgroup templates to point to the file path on the machine that the sharepoint document library would sync to when you sync it to a users PC.

For some god awful reason Word still disables the macros on the file and the user gets the banner asking to enable them, but before when opening them from the share they did not have this problem. Even if I copy the file out of the synced sharepoint library to another location that I have defined as a trusted location its fine. So it seems to be something specific to the sharepoint library despite it sittin in c:\users%username%\Orgname\

I've tried adding the sharepoint site to the trusted sites in internet options but that also didnt effect it. Really not sure what else to try. Googling anything about word and macros just gives you generic garbage.

Edit:

I just tried another test where I disabled the network on my test machine and opened those documents and I dont get the banner. This means it must be opening it/treating it slightly different when it can talk to sharepoint online.

I dont know if theres a way to check the "directory" that word thinks its opened it from to see if there is a hidden "file path" that I can white list some how.

Edit2:

Ok so it turns out this was a rather simple fix, but doesn't seem to be documented all that well (at least from what I could see), but basically you can put in the actual sharepoint online url in to the trusted locations in the office settings.

Problem: Got this error when trying to open an Excel Sheet stored in a SharePoint 2010 document library: “This workbook cannot be opened because it is not stored in an Excel services application trusted location. To create an Excel Services Application trusted location, contact your system administrator”.

Solution:

By default, Excel Services allows browser rendering on Workbooks in “Trusted location”. Add your SharePoint library/site/webapp URL to Excel services trusted file location to eliminate this issue. Here is how to create excel services trusted location:

  • Navigate to SharePoint 2010 Central Administration site
  • Under Application Management, Click on Manage Service applications
  • Select “Excel Services Application” and click on “Manage”
  • Click on “Trusted File Locations” and then Click on “Add Trusted File Location”
Add SharePoint site to trusted locations in Excel
  • Enter the URL of your SharePoint web app/site/library and choose “Trust Children”
Add SharePoint site to trusted locations in Excel
  • Click “OK” to save your configuration changes.

Now, your Excel sheet should render without any issue.

2. Click File > Options.

3.    Click Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations.

4.    Click Add new location.

SharePoint Online is a cloud-based service provided as part of the Office 365 suite. It allows users to organise and share information and collaborate with colleagues, partners and customers.

Many organisations using SharePoint have document libraries mapped as network drives, so enabling users to connect to a shared SharePoint library on the network.

This article shows how to map a SharePoint site, or library, to a network drive letter on your PC. There are three steps:

Obtain address details of the SharePoint site or library you wish to map

To map a SharePoint site as a network drive, you first need to obtain the address details of the SharePoint site or library you wish to map. Proceed as follows.

Note:
It's important to use Internet Explorer, as this won't work in other browsers, not even the new Windows 10 browser, Edge. In Windows 10 you'll need to search for IE by hitting the Windows key and typing in "Internet Explorer".

  1. Enter name and password, tick the Keep me signed in check box, then click Sign in.
